Maaaan I that's rough, a lot of people like Chris' messages but don't think about his demise, cue to many getting in danger/injured/dying trying to reach the bus before it was removed. It was really stupid because you didn't do that to follow his message, but anyways.
I've never tried to live rough, but I've started living on my own months ago. I think the important stuff is knowing where you are, meaning the weather, if the river floods, the places you can get food and other essential stuff and what you can carry in a backpack, if you are in nature; if not, learn to know the safe spots in town and where are people that give away food for free and were you can easily find a job. You don't need to know a lot of stuff, but thing that keep you warm, fed and safe are your top priority. Also you need to have brains to not make stupid decisions, such as Mostly Harmless doe. who FUCKING DIED in his tent.

Yeah people can do it by choice, move from place to place, hitching is a way, often aiming for seasonal work. A lot of people convert vans to live in, better shelter, though it comes with higher running costs than you and a backpack.
If you go by foot, leather hobo is a common name for you.
A lot of people end up doing this out of financial need, lost their job, house. But people do it by choice. There's those youtubers who do van living, funded by patreon. Put your girlfriend half dressed on camera occasionally, or every video, helps the channel grow. Rubber hobos, if you live in your vehicle.
Some people just can't stand the idea of living in one place, and America is a good country to let your wanderlust have its say.
