Could you describe Chinese comedy? How does it compare to American humor?

Why do you think China has so many high earning comedy movies vs the rest of the world?

What about alternative comedy, are there any "cult classic" type Chinese TV shows or movies people talk about?

Like Mr.Show and Wonder Shozen aren't as well known internationally but are extremely beloved in America.

Do they have any concept of parody humor in China or satire?

Also do they have porn in China? What actresses in China are considered hot or beautiful?

Is there a lot of regionalism in China? Like how the US has stereotypes for each of the countries regions and especially for its major cities, does China have good ones for those?

Compared to American comedies, China tends to use homophones and exaggerated topics to express humor

Most Chinese movies have patriotic plots, which are too heavy. Comedy movies are one of the few that can relax

In the 1980s and 1990s, China produced cult films, but now most of these films have become lost media

No one knows Mr Show and Wonder Shozen,The concept is even more difficult to discuss

Except for Hong Kong and Taiwan, some rural areas in China will shoot some non-public porn movies, but most of them are of poor quality and not worth watching

Yes, Hebei people are hostile to Beijingers because Beijing has sent industrial pollution to Hebei. Shanghainese are hostile to all people from other provinces except foreigners and think that people from other provinces have robbed their interests

Greetings to our new, chinese Overlord. Good thread. Surprised to learn how good deepL has gotten at translating chink runes. Obligatory northern chinese cuisine best chinese cuisine.
Or suggest a Chinese chef on YouTube who shares recipes
Not a chink but Chef Wang Gang on YT does the real shit. He used to have two channels, one for westerners, one for his chinese audience, the chinese one is where it's at. Dude is a gifted chef. I think he merged both channels now and, sadly, not all of his stuff has english subs.

That doesn't sound too dissimilar to Hungarian comedy, or even Soviet, though without the extra layers of absurdism.
Same question, what is a similar comedy in the west/US

Wordplay just feels very "old school" like something for stupider elderly people. Even Sid Caesar was doing parodies of movies and then you had stuff like Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, and outside of that lots of humor based on characters like Jose Jimenez

He was banned in China just because of a joke on a talk show
What did he say?
He said on China Central Television that he was a Chinese with foreign blood and praised everything in China. He was a double dealer who only wanted to make profits, Part of his video is authentic, but it's best not to trust him completely
Here is his performance on Chinese television

Always had the feeling he was kind of a grifter, haven't watched his content in years though.

欢迎。我们喜欢取笑这里的每个人,所以尽量不要把事情看得太严重。请告诉你的中国同胞,猫本人要求他们停止吃他的朋友。谢谢。

People from Fujian, and Guangdong, have this accent. I am from northern China, and northern Chinese people do not speak like this
>Comparing Fujian to Guangdong
Now that's just cruel

I'll try to supplement his answers:

Chinese humor is very heavy on satire and puns, which can make it a bit hard to explain to people who don't speak the language

Regionalism is huge and also popular in humor, making fun of Shandong for being backwards is a national pastime. Guangdong is also a very easy target because of the insane shit they do (incest comes to mind) and the weird news that comes from there. Ningxia is often associated with serial killings due to a string of them years ago. The southern half is seen as "effeminate" and the north as "manly", Sichuan and Chongqing are associated with beautiful women (except for Chengdu, which is associated with gay men). The north is famous for their alcohol consumption (take a look at diabetes rates, they're very enlightening). "Cantonese people eat Fujianese people" is a meme that refuses to die (still the first result if you search 廣東人 on both baidu and google), which was the result of Cantonese people getting irritated after getting made fun of over a map of average monetary gifts (average in Guangdong was very low, Fujian was very high). They're famous for eating anything and everything anyway, so the meme almost sounds like a believable fact.

I've read that the Catholic Church is heavily repressed by the Chinese government. Do you know any Chinese Catholics? What's your view of the Church?

Sounds a lot like the Balkans. Guangdong is Chinese Florida.
Chengdu is Slovenia.

Satire and injokes seem prevalent across ex-marx sphere nations.

Catholicism is very popular in rural China, and there are few Catholics in cities. However, because Catholicism in China is not under the leadership of the Pope, most of them create their own doctrines

He told a joke about eating bats in COVID-19 Wuhan
All that after he alienated so many other people in the region by pandering to the party :story: He's a perfect example of why Dear Sneeder hates the British, isn't he?
This if fucking hilarious :story:
It happened almost overnight too, I don't think I've ever gotten whiplash from memes before this.

"PussyCola: ??? Who said that"
"Cantonese people have no red envelopes
Cantonese people eat the Fujianese
Cantonese people red envelopes
Cantonese people eat anything
Cantonese people eat little kids
Why don't Cantonese people have red envelopes
Cantonese people speaking Mandarin"

Edit, forgot to post the origin:

The guy who posted this is from Fujian, his buddy is Cantonese
"So I hear y'all Cantonese people..."
"Particularly like to eat Fujianese people."

It's not quite as cut and dry as that based on what I've seen. Yes they rejected the Holy See after the rise of the communist government, but in 2018 there was an agreement to give the Pope veto power over their bishops, while there's some speculation as to how well that agreement is honored by the CCP its a start at least. Apparently that 2018 agreement formalized something that had been informal for a time before as well.

I am somewhat concerned about them creating their own doctrines, that's something I havent heard before and it's very dangerous.

Is it really any worse than what the current pope is doing?
He's an absolute melt.
