It wouldn't have aired until later that evening but May 9th, 1991 was the day when Michael Landon appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson for the last time to talk about his inoperable pancreatic cancer, which he would die from less than two months later, on July 1st, 1991.

Grunge hadn't quite broken through to the mainstream yet, Nirvana's Nevermind was still 4 months away. The most popular song on the Billboard Hot 100 that week was actually Roxette's "Joyride".

Also, personally, I still hadn't heard of Red Bull energy drinks until seeing all of the product placement in Wipeout XL on Playstation over half a decade later.
 
Being that I was around and on the USENET at the time, everyone would be trolling the fuck out of Archimedes Plutonium, and bitching about the Kibology folks beging absolute faggots.
Also IRC was as gay as most discord groups are, and everyone just has fucking nostalgia.
 
I think Jolt Cola was about the closest thing you could buy to an energy drink in the United States in 1991. Here's a CBC News video from 1986 about Jolt hitting the Canadian beverage market.




Kurt Cobain Suicide Watch

Most people who weren't already following the indie music scene in Seattle didn't know who Kurt Cobain was in May 1991 because Nevermind wouldn't be released until September 24th (and the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" single was only released two weeks before the Nevermind album).
