Another fun Gladiator themed movie but I just can't help feel it's just the same as the first one over again, but with a change of cast and different arena fights (a naval battle game instead of chariots, and the undefeated champ rides a rhino this time round) and a different villain to make it feel like a new movie.
Similarities to first:
Start with opening battle.
Protagonist captured by the Romans as slave and sold as a gladiator.
Protagonist doesn't want to fight but does because he has rage for vengeance.
Emperor(s) is an asshole.
Protagonist wins a bunch of arena battles and becomes a crowd pleaser. The people love this guy and detest the emperor(s).
There's a plot to rescue and free the protagonist which fails.
Manipulation scene with the emperor or the "twist villain" in the 2nd movie.
Showdown at the end between protagonist and the movie villain.
The revelation that Lucius' owner would be the villain of movie #2 wasn't that big of a revelation. The emperors were just assholes with mental health issues (similar to Joaquin's Commodus, except he was more composed and controlled) and Denzil's character whatever his name is was introduced as a "good guy" but the hints that he was controlling and manipulative for his own goals came quickly and strongly.
Side note- the dead wife of the guy in movie #2 is ugly and has one of those gross beard tattoos. I'd be more inclined to root for him if he was avenging a hot wife.
edit: and a fun fact. Lior Raz, who plays the tough trainer and escort for the gladiators, was a bodyguard for Arnie Schwz. in real life.
