I really, really hate fan fiction.

Man, if that OP post was about a person instead of a hobby, it would be hella A-Log.

It's pretty spergy of you to hate on a whole hobby because a few of your friends decided to be obnoxious. Just because you, in your limited experience, have never read any good fanfiction does not mean that it doesn't exist. Even if you had more experience with fanfiction beyond your friends, it would still not qualify you to make sweeping generalizations like that; generalizations of vast and hard-to-quantify groups (like populations, cosmic objects, and the literally millions of fanfics floating around in cyberspace) are, as always, logical fallacies.

Also worthy of note is that many of the good fanfic writers (and there are plenty) do write original fiction stories as well.

TLDR: you're mad about something harmless (that you don't even really understand) and you look silly.

While SIA sperged pretty hard I would agree with the idea fanfiction is pretty shit. It's almost always an avenue taken by people with limited imagination and creativity. It's easy for the mentally inept to piggyback off a proven and successful idea (every lolcow I can think of has done so, with extremely limited exception). It's pretty fun to pick out the people who obviously write fanfiction based on the strength of their reaction in this thread.

Either that, or they're reacting that way because they've read good fanfiction.

You're right that many of the lolcows we're familiar with have gone down that road, and the reason so much bad fanfiction exists is because many with either subnormal intelligence or undeveloped writing skills decided to give it a try. However, had they decided to write an original story instead, the results would have been the same. If someone's a bad writer, they're going to write a bad story, no matter what genre they choose.

There are many, many, MANY bad original stories, both published in books or on personal blogs.

Would it be smart of me, or anyone, to read some bad stories and declare that "ALL FICTION IS TERRIBLE ARRRGH!!!"? Of course not.

Fanfiction is not automatically poor in quality for being fanfiction. Some are good, bad, mediocre, whatever.

Judge stories on a case by case basis, not on their very broad label.

I forgot I even started this thread, but see everything Null said.

Anyone heard of a Smash Bros fanfic called "The Subspace Emissary's World Conquest"? It's a ongoing story of a OC with a overpowered Lucario being sucked in the world of Smash. It has about 219 chapters making it one of the longest fanfics. Here's a interview on the person that wrote it.

I've heard of that, it's insane. It's not just the longest fanfic dude its the longest peace of fiction ever created and he's still going.

The funny part is he doesn't even come off as very autistic in that interview until you reach the part where he is asked what it's about. OC and Lucario were already red flags but woooow.

dude i proofread my best friend's jet set radio fanfiction.
scat, farting, massive dongs, armpit smelling, and vomiting were involved. i am not making this up.

Funny, I thought of something similar to that when I looked at that first chapter. Seriously to be honest, he needs to know the "less is more" aspect. Dragging a story for too long is the worst thing you can do.

To be fair, he isn't aiming to be some pro big shot author and he said in the interview that he only really started writing because it was to learn English. He seems like a nice enough guy and this is his thing, his hobby. Now if he's working on this instead of having a job or something then there's a problem.

OT, but why Harrison? Like, I get Waterflower.

Yeah, you're going to give Misty a water-based name like "Waterflower" but then give Brock something generic like "Harrison" as opposed to something like "Rockington"?

"Brock Rockington". It rolls right off the tongue.

Besides my current fancomic, do have done some other fanfiction I've done in the past. Nothing I'd show off, honestly, but most of it was stuff based on play-by-post roleplaying games I used to be a part of, and that was just me having fun and sharing memories of good times with friends.

My biggest problem is fan fiction that must be taken seriously, like DF01's or Sonichu. If your doing it for fun or even writing practice, I don't think it's a big deal.
When your doing it for hopeful profit, that's a problem.
This is why I'm glad I never started.

Unless you're writing 50 Shades of Grey. Change the names, change the setting, bam! ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL.
