I bought a pistol today. While a supporter of gun rights I have been largely ambivalent about owning one. I did have a hunting rifle for several years but sold it during a rough financial patch and never did replace it. When it came to guns I liked the idea that I could get one if I needed to but otherwise never really felt the need otherwise.
That was of course before corona-chan started dancing and police began talking about cutting back their "services". I live close to a rough urban core where there are plenty of neighborhoods that like to "keep it real". And this crisis has put some things in perspective. I want to be able to "keep it real" as well. And i did not want to be the last sucker who could not. So today I set out to my local gun shop.
I was looking for something affordable cuz money is tight also thanks to Corona. So those fancy big irons for a thousand dollars were out. I also needed something practical. If I needed to keep it real, odds are good it will be at close quarters. So I needed something I could keep on me and also bring to bear quickly. That put the long rifles out too. And the gun shop had been stripped. Jesus. I thought the bread aisle at kroger looked bare. Empty display cases everywhere.
But lo doth my eyes deceive me. Sitting all alone but for a 1200 dollar revolver next to it sat a Ruger LC380 for $479. Compact but packing a punch, semi automatic, solid black. I could not believe my luck. Thanks to recurrent arthritis in my dominant hand I needed something with less kick and the lc380 was absolutely perfect. It was, dare I say, divine providence. And it was below MSRP to boot. I bought it immediately. And yeah yeah, I know thr Ruger 380 is considered inferior to other things, but again I needed something affordable, easy to handle and with less recoil then usual. It's not a perfect pistol but it is perfect for me.
Gun owners have in the past talked about the peace of mind they give. Can confirm it's all true. The wife has also never owned a gun but now she plans to get her own as well. We live in interesting times and I have realized you need something in your corner to prevent it from getting too interesting.
