Good morning, Houston. Here’s the latest on Hurricane Laura:

Hurricane Laura is expected to make landfall on the Gulf Coast as a major hurricane Wednesday night.

10:30 p.m. update:

A hurricane warning was just issued for all of Galveston Island and coastal communities to the east into Louisiana as Hurricane Laura strengthens in the Gulf of Mexico.

There's also a tropical storm warning for inland communities, including all of Greater Houston east of the Brazos River.

Ahead of the storm, several school districts have closed, including Galveston, Brazosport and Huffman ISD.

7:30 a.m. update:

The National Hurricane Center upgraded Laura to a hurricane Tuesday morning, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

Where the storm lands is yet to be seen, but the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center shows a westward shift in the storm's track that includes more of the Texas coastline. Laura is currently in the Gulf of Mexico and should rapidly intensify in the next 36 hours.

Meteorologists said that Laura's track could still shift even more westward, but they stressed that early forecast (between two to three days out) have an 80-mile margin of error.

Hurricane Hunters will fly into the storm later today to obtain more specific data on the storm's intensity.

Early Tuesday morning, the city of Galveston ordered a mandatory evacuation ahead of the storm.

I'm always so glad I live far enough inland that hurricanes only ever give me some nice rain.

Still, hope anyone who's directly in the path is safe and all.

At least compared to Harvey, this one should come by pretty fast. Harvey was devastating for the fact that it brought nothing, but torrential rain and strong winds for almost four days in the same area, making five landfalls across the Gulf, being perhaps the wettest storm in US history, and nearly tied with Katrina with $125 billion worth of damage.

I also have friend in the Houston area whose house was the only one in his neighborhood that was spared by the flooding, the power was even still on. Now he has to do with this again. Here's to hoping it's just a graze with a weaker part of this storm.

Called my grandparents to ask if they had their shit ready in case their town gets hit by Laura, since they're right in the path its supposed to take. Grandma says they're driving up to stay at the usual relative's house more out of the way that they go to whenever hurricanes are expected to blow through the town, and jokingly says she'd rather have her house destroyed by an act of God than an act of stupidity like rioters burning it down lol.
