Seeing how nobody in charge can seem to bring themselves to care about hundreds if not thousands of Appalachians dead and countless more suffering and displaced combined with how they all completely fucking ignored the East Palestine disaster which will poison generations to come has genuinely made me seethe. These people don't fucking care about us. The rural poor are completely disposable to them. Who cares if some hicks are dead, right? These uncaring fucks are fundamentally evil, evil people and I hate them with all of my heart.

On a lighter note, I'm glad all of the local kiwis in this thread are doing alright, hang in there as best as you can. My cousin was living in Asheville with her new baby and we've finally gotten in contact with her and confirmed both her and baby are okay after a few days of her being unaccounted for, thank God. I hope and pray that many, many other families get similar good news in the following days.

There's still areas around where I live that still don't have power or water. Blessed that the area I live in didn't get hit too hard.

It hit us on Friday.

Leicester is doing well. Some trees down and flooding along creeks, some gravel roads severely damaged. The community came together quickly to help neighbors. Unfortunately, farmers have lost crops and had topsoil impacted by flooding. The loss of final hay cut will impact winter feeding for cattle ranches. All in, however, Leicester will be ok.
While I haven't had eyes on Fletcher, I've heard it was hit pretty hard. On par with Hendersonville. I'll see if I can get in touch with boots on the ground in Fletcher.
The Cherokee fared well with manageable damage to some roads, trees down and some property loss.
The overblown reports of rape gangs, buses of illegals and wild West shoot outs are click bait fiction. Yes, there's small outbreaks of violence and some looting, but this isn't Detroit. Knock wood. There's going to be many dead who were never reported missing due to the sizable homeless population. The odds of bodies in trees are fairly high because...flood. Body recovery is going to be a very drawn out reality. Fuck anyone using this shit to foment fear to bolster an agenda. There's definitely instability and fear, but Burial's still serving on South Slope and businesses are reaching out as they open their doors. Cash is still necessary until Internet is restored.
There's huge lines, not just for gasoline and foodstuffs, but for propane, as well.
Sylva is in decent shape, but Canton has been devastated. Again. Canton's last flood was in 2021, I believe; they finished full rebuild in 2023.
Keep the kids affected in your thoughts. These disasters create a surge in domestic violence, compounding traumas and further fracturing childhoods already marred by rain and flood.

You know, going back to those first two pages, I'm reminded that the forecast models warned this could happen. But the thread was moving really slowly with just us few storm autists watching. Seems tragically indicative of the region in general.

Always keep your head on a swivel frens. The doomers on Kiwifarms called it correctly.

Most certainly HMX-1 will be providing logistical support if he flies out in anything smaller than the VC-25. They should use the C-32, I suppose, but I’m gonna make the trip to see AF1 either way. Any day with a 747 is a good day.

Was wondering how the Cherokee community was faring. I hadn’t heard much about them. Glad they were at least spared some of this.
 
My area was part of the disaster path. It's been a living shit show. The neighboring county decided to turn water off for 48 hours. We've been without power since Friday and eating peanut butter and MREs since. Cellphone service has been garbage since Friday only now getting reliable data signals.

House has some minor damage but not as bad as others.

Someone got shot at a local QuikTrip fighting over gas or food or something, apparently.

Still no power.
