If you are not an alcoholic, become one.
If you never taken drugs, do them.
If you aren't big into listening to music, get big into it.
Because you will find writing is as interesting as watching local government news on a Sunday morning when you're sober. Your mind sits stagnated due to paralyzing indecision due to crippling lack of confidence; whereas when you are loaded and feeling loose you don't have a voice telling you that your idea sucks shitty assholes.

You want to get good, you read and you write, constantly. That's pretty much it, as several people have already said.

Inspiration for short stories - do something completely mundane like cleaning or going for a walk (I've found music doesn't much help me, but others swear by it) and let your mind idle. Something usually catches your imagination. Then write it until it's done. No bullshit targets, just tell the story.

Seriously about the editor. Fine a good one and pay them to tell you why you’re shit. It helps.

A novel can be summed up in one sentence.

Do that and then elaborate. Short story.

The hardest part for me is rewriting - it’s much easier to start something new than slog through a rewrite. So practice that.

Forget everything you've been taught about writing. Received wisdom is mostly bullshit. Read this book. It will change everything for you.
