Does G-d really need a person's last name? I feel like He would know who I'm referring to.

From what I remember in Catholic school, I think it goes like this….

Step 1: get on your knees.

Step 2: close your eyes.

Step 3: don’t tell anyone else about this or God won’t answer your prayers, and he might even kill your parents.

Step 4: open your mouth and hold still

Than there was some gagging and I remember crying, but than ice cream after.
So uh, there’s that.
Does God even consider human birth names? He's got a book with the names of all those saved, which always led me to believe that there must be some distinguishing factor between all the John Smiths.

Also, because the Spirit intercedes on behalf of us and our unknown groanings (Rom. 8:26-27), it is a sure thing that prayers delivered are understood. I think they're actually better understood in Heaven than they are on earth.

Is this serious? I have a hard time considering it is.

Are you a believer? If you are, it follows that you attribute omniscience to God, which means your good intentions and wishes are clear in regards to who are aimed at.

There's no confusion, someone (God) who supposedly knows you better than yourself is not going to screw up because you didn't provide the last name or ZIP code, even if the person has no name.

Having said this, I personally don't hold religious beliefs, so prayers to me are little more than poetry or placebo for the one reciting them.

If that's what you believe in I have no problem, but I'd suggest that before any praying, if you love that person, you try to help them with actions rather than with thoughts.

In days of old, people were identified not just by their name, but by their family name and names of their parents. So one person would be "john smith, son of bob and lauren". Adam and Eve were the first of their kind, so they are THE Adam and THE Eve while their first child would be somwthing like "Bobby, son of Adam" followed by whatever they're known for that would eventually evolve into a surname "Bobby Tannery, son of Adam".
