Opinion How the Talmud Can Change Your Life - It’s the greatest self-help book ever written. And isn’t that what we need right now?

Like so many Jews, I’ve spent the last few weeks drowning in a torrent of terrors. The reports from Israel, documenting the worst single-day massacre of Jews since Hitler’s goons were stopped, are soul-crushing. Beheaded babies, families burned alive, women brutally raped: These stories haunt me, making it difficult to go about my day. And it doesn’t help much to step out in my own city, New York, and see pro-Hamas mobs flashing swastika signs and calling for the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state.

But I’m lucky. I have the best guide ever written to getting through tough times. It’s 2,711 pages long and 1,500 years old, and it’s the greatest self-help book ever written.

It’s the Talmud.

Flip to any random page, and even if you get through the Talmud’s unique design—like an ancient precursor to the internet, it consists of intertwined links, with text and commentary presented together on the same folio—you’re not likely to walk away inspired. To the extent that it’s a book at all—my friend, the writer Jonathan Rosen, called it “a drift net for catching God”—it does much more than merely tell stories. Instead, it records arguments, often intricate ones, almost always without telling you who’s right.

Dive in, however, and you’ll find precisely the pearls of wisdom needed to make it through even the toughest of times. Here’s a taste, a tale of what you ought to do when it seems like your world has come to an end.

The Talmud tells us that when Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai—who lived in the first century CE and was widely considered his generation’s leading scholar—realized that the Romans were about to sack Jerusalem, he went to see the emperor. He didn’t ask for mercy; the holy city, he understood, was doomed. Instead, he made three seemingly strange wishes.

He asked the emperor to spare Yavneh, a town in central Israel known as a vibrant center of Torah study. He asked the emperor to protect the family of Rabban Gamliel, a communal leader and the scion of a celebrated rabbinic dynasty. And he asked the emperor to send doctors to heal a wise and righteous rabbi named Tzadok, who was so grief-stricken about the impending catastrophe that he’d stopped eating.

Pay close attention to these requests, and you’ll see principles that can still guide us all today. In times of great upheaval, Rabbi Yochanan knew, we needed to embrace three difficult but essential truths.

First, when the worst happens, we can always start again. Even when our institutions are gutted and our homes burned down, figuratively or literally, we have permission to pack up and find some other place to go, and other people who share our convictions. There’s always Yavneh, a place of refuge that may not be where we had hoped to end up but that would at least keep us safe and see to it that we survive.

But survival, Rabbi Yochanan knew, wasn’t as simple as merely setting up shop elsewhere and announcing that business continues as usual. When you lose something—or someone—you love, you often also lose hope, wondering how life could possibly go on in the face of so much devastation. This is where Rabbi Yochanan’s second request comes in: By insisting that the same rabbinic dynasty that had been in charge for decades remained in place, he tethered the Jews to tradition, giving them an ember to remind them of the great spiritual fires that once burned bright and making them believe that these same fires may burn bright once again.

The biggest piece of the puzzle, though, was still missing: Even with somewhere to live and someone to trust and something to connect them to their more storied past, people still needed concrete instruction on how to live. Enter request number three. Rather than worry about “the Jews,” a mass of people whose names and stories he didn’t and couldn’t know, Rabbi Yochanan made a point of singling out just one man, his suffering friend. By doing so, he set an example of what he wanted the society he was rebuilding to look like. In Rabbi Yochanan’s imagination, the perfect community didn’t prattle on about abstractions like virtue and justice as it stood by idly while its people suffered; it slowed down for long enough to listen to the sobs of just one elderly man, find them intolerable, and step in to help.

These principles guide us still, giving us strength even as so many feel despondent. And they’re preserved in a book—a manual for living with defeat, to quote another wise rabbi, Leonard Cohen—written for broken people in broken times. The Talmud came to be because the Temple in Jerusalem, Judaism’s beating heart for centuries, was burned down in 70 CE. The rabbis saved the old religion from extinction by capturing it in a book. They recorded their stories and their disagreements in 63 sprawling volumes; to read it today is to enter into a conversation uninterrupted by space and time, with one generation offering to the next some sound advice on how to live and asking in return not for obedience but for contemplation and then action.

So Jewish or not, heartbroken or otherwise, jump right in. More than any other book you might’ve read, the Talmud can change your life.

therefore Amalek was the great evil enemy of the Jews.
Amalek is the enemy of the Jews because they were the first nation to attack the Jews after the Jews left Egypt. Has nothing to do with them being Canaanite

He didn't miss anything he just openly lies by omission as if we wouldn't notice. He's an utter simpleton who loves sucking baby dick.
You literally thought a play in 1933 Chicago was proof of Jews sacrificing to moloch in broad daylight, I'd be careful with that label of simpleton

No it's proof jews still celebrate child sacrifice, which they do. That's a literal celebration. Again the only way you try to argue out of being wrong is inventing farcical nonexistent context when there is none. It's literally right there in the open being celebrated. I was 30 before finding out what "worshipping a golden calf" actually meant. You know because Christians whitewashed the evil behavior of jews.

Funny how you never deny the rampant pedophilia of jews though. I guess that's a little too self evident to argue. Probably from first hand experience. Sorry you got molested into your beliefs.

It has more than a little bit to do with it though. Anyone evil in the Torah is usually descended in some way from the Canaanites. Egyptians were descended from Canaan's brother Mizraim, and Babylonians were descended from his other brother Cush, but then it is the curse of Ham and I'm sure even the Talmud gets pretty confused about exactly who did what to Noah and who got cursed. Anyone descended from Shem or even more specifically Abraham who clashed with the ancient Judeans were also somehow tainted by association with the Canaanites, which cancels out any blessing, because YHWH goes at great lengths to specifically say never to ever fraternise with, marry or even show mercy to the dirty dirty Canaanites and it's people not listening to this very specific instruction that bring around the sufferings the Jews experience in the Old Testament.

This mindset carries through to this day, which is why Judaism is so insular, so specifically matrilineal and why it has persisted for millennia after the Jews were cast out of Jerusalem. "We're the chosen people, everyone against us is cursed". The missing piece in the puzzle for me is what exactly is meant by the children of Japheth shall dwell in the tents of Shem, since Japheth is essentially white people and they're not tainted by the curse of Ham/Canaan, but it's also not entirely clear why Noah favoured Shem over Japheth (other than Shem's bloodline would eventually create Jews, so creation myth etc). If you've got any recommendations for what bits of the Talmud to look up so I can see what the old timey Rabbis had to say about Japheth and his bloodline, I'd be appreciative.

30 years old before reading exodus lol. The golden calf has very little to do with moloch

You have a strange propensity for viewing events as independent. There can't be a play showing things without the play being real.

Why would I deny something that's not a problem?

Yoma 9b/10a, rabbis identify Japeths bloodline as Persian

Lmao another bold faced lie. What do you think that play was depicting?
You have a strange propensity for viewing events as independent. There can't be a play showing things without the play being real.
You have a weird way of never telling the truth.
Why would I deny something that's not a problem?
Lmao there you go, he admits he's a pedophile and there's no problem with it.

Yeah the Jewish god moloch. Modern jews are descended from Canaan. You literally worship child sacrifice.
What's the binding of isaac if not an explicit rejection of human sacrifice

Since you know they cut and suck baby dicks as a matter of religion.
the sucking baby dicks thing is rarely practiced, my sons mohel didnt do that

What's a tophet and why did they keep finding them later on?
Jews who left Judaism and worshipped Moloch went there to conduct their rituals. The Jewish king Josiah forbade the practice.

Lmao "Guys they just rarely suck baby dick its fine".
I don't like it but it's slowly dying out so whatever. It's not done for pleasure

Lmao I just showed how it never left Rabbanical Judeism. Keep pretending like things that never happen, don't keep happening though. It's not like it'll never effect you.
I don't like it but it's slowly dying out so whatever. It's not done for pleasure
Oh, looks like it already did. Still justifying the molestation of infants. "Guys it's dying out" why are you not actively ending it? Also of course it's done for pleasure, otherwise they wouldn't do it.

Felt about the same when I decided to read the Quran one time; but mainly, if I'm gonna be talking shit, I should at least have an idea of what I'm talking about. I came to the conclusion that it's a shitty book that not even Allah could make perfect, because it apparently only makes sense when you read it it in Arabic; or Allah is autistic, and his followers are mad because their God is a fucking lunatic. Even when you get a translation that's certified by an Islamic authority, you read something distasteful, either the translation is wrong or you're misinterpreting of it; and the Quran is infallible. And look, there are a few things I can wholeheartedly agree with, namely no Interest on loans, but I'm not about to learn a whole new language and convert for that. But my main beef, as stupid as this may sound, is that it's written via longest to shortest verses. Not chronologically, not the musings of different witnesses to Mohammed, the longest shit at the front, and the shortest shit at the back... because Allah is fucking autistic.
I don't know what translations you've read of the Qur'an (there are a few good ones in English but most of them have major errors in creed) but the point of the translation is to give you the general meaning; when people tell you that you need to know the classical Arabic its so that you can truly appreciate and realize it's eloquence. 1400 years later, and there hasn't been a single chapter written that can even come close to the eloquence of the Quran, and that challenge was given to Quraysh, who were the masters of the Arabic language and poetry.
But if you want a reasonable translation that is inline with Orthodox Islamic teachings, I recommend the Noble Quran by Taqi-ud-din Al-Hilali. It makes good use of brackets and footnotes which might put you off, but you'll get the closest translation to the Arabic meaning of the Quran that exists today.
At least if whatever you read puts distaste in your mouth, you'll have a more accurate reason for your hate.

The point's already been made, but... fucking hell...
I trust my community not to molest my son.
Ritual child molestation is a condition of acceptance into your community. And, moreover, it's a demonstration of piety.

Whew - and, if I may be so bold - lad. Your people do have... an interesting way of looking at things, I'll give you that.

While seeing Talmud as a source of feel-good stories is rather strange, what I see in this thread is even dumber.

First of all, no point discussing Talmud with non-Jews, just saying. To be fair there is no point to discuss it with someone who didn't learn it extensively either, other than for the purpose of learning/teaching, but that's beside the point.

Secondly: you have to be really not familiar with Orthodox Jewish lifestyle to see it as a hotbed of perversion. Are there Jewish pedophiles? Certainly. Psychopathy, BPD, NPD, and all kinds of philias know no creed nor ethnicity. Are there more pedophiles among Orthodox Jews than in the secular population? I don't think so. Show me some statistics please, otherwise I will reject your claim as not supported by evidence.

What I know for sure is that Orthodox Judaism is one of the few last bastions against globo-homo anti-traditional indoctrination. Even though you probably adamantly deny being serfs of globalist tyranny, in essence by attacking one of the few not cucked religions you are just polezniye duraki,

By this thread alone, I start to think that the main source of the hatred of Jews is plain old animosity of midwits towards anything that makes them feel stupid. "Oh no, thought experiments! My wittle brain hurts, stop it, it should be abolished and forbidden! Only simple thoughts are allowed not your elaborate cunnings, you filthy Jew".

I will not stop. Here is a thought experiment for you:

Let's say there is a guy named Reuven, living in 21st century. Reuven's passion is degeneracy and subversion. What would be more likely: he would diligently study and encourage others to follow thousands of laws that include forbidding gay sex and bestiality, and makes his life more difficult or he would justify his freedom to choose depravity by claiming that all ancient traditions are nonsense made up by worse people than him?

Another challenger enters, let's see how long he lasts.
First of all, no point discussing Talmud with non-Jews, just saying.
Yeah I would refuse to talk about something I couldn't defend openly. Gotta keep it hidden so it doesn't get picked apart for the bullshit it is.
To be fair there is no point to discuss it with someone who didn't learn it extensively either, other than for the purpose of learning/teaching, but that's beside the point.
If you can't talk about and defend the defining literature you base your life around, what's it for? You don't want to discuss it because you know the contents and how bad they make you look.
Secondly: you have to be really not familiar with Orthodox Jewish lifestyle to see it as a hotbed of perversion.
"Oy vey goy, stop believing your lying eyes! These are good jews!"

We wouldnt see it if it didnt exist. We literally started the year off with jews pulling out soiled baby mattresses and climbing out of sewers.
Show me some statistics please, otherwise I will reject your claim as not supported by evidence.
Heres a statistic for you: 100% of jewish boys are molested as infants by old jewish men.
What I know for sure is that Orthodox Judaism is one of the few last bastions against globo-homo anti-traditional indoctrination.
Yeah the guys who create it and push it are the line of defense against it. Why is Tel Aviv the gayest place on earth again? Oh all the sex offenders escaping justice from all over the world because they are jewish.
Even though you probably adamantly deny being serfs of globalist tyranny, in essence by attacking one of the few not cucked religions you are just polezniye duraki,
I'll never be a serf because I recognize no authority over myself, I'll do what I want and judge the consequences for myself. Congrats on being a slave though.

"Oh vey we jews are just so smart, if only you dumb goy could see"

You can't hold a conversation without lying outright because you are both weak and dumb. You are cowards who can't stand the light like the rats you are.
I will not stop. Here is a thought experiment for you:
good keep going, dig your grave.

He would write a giant list of rules that contradict each other and segment every part of life into confusion. I wonder who would do that?

Jews who left Judaism and worshipped Moloch went there to conduct their rituals. The Jewish king Josiah forbade the practice.
It's a bit more involved than that, it's mentioned several times in the Tora I believe-and the Israelites were no strangers to the practice, otherwise the Tora would not repeatedly remind the Israelites child sacrifice was not permitted and and an affront to the Lord. It was an ongoing problem that had to reined in more than a few times.

That said its not a part of Orthodox Judaism. It may be practiced by some that went off the reservation but those people are called insane, delusional murderers - and they aren't always jews, either.
What I know for sure is that Orthodox Judaism is one of the few last bastions against globo-homo anti-traditional indoctrination. Even though you probably adamantly deny being serfs of globalist tyranny, in essence by attacking one of the few not cucked religions you are just polezniye duraki,
Sure, dumbass who have never met an Orthodox Jew and don't understand they're not all alike and have different beliefs and behaviors are just regurgitating what they read somewhere else. The problem is the tendency of jews to protect those who engage in wrongdoing, even if it's to the detriment of jews and their communities. It came about in Europe when it was better for the community to deal with it than the authorities which may have imposed a collective punishment.

However, in the America (not the just the US) this was twisted and leveraged by criminal gangs of jews, and the jewish community still sought to protect them, causing a lot of resentment and distrust among non-jews. It's something the jewish community fails to rectify to this day although that's slowly changing. Could be faster imo since this reluctance to air dirty laundry in public only reinforces antisemitism.

There is no prize in debating people who don't know much.
Yeah I would refuse to talk about something I couldn't defend openly. Gotta keep it hidden so it doesn't get picked apart for the bullshit it is.
No, it's quite similar to no point in talking with someone who doesn't understand computers about computer science. Except it's worse, because misunderstanding breeds animosity, and every word can be twisted into a sick narrative. That's the nature of hatred and language itself.
If you can't talk about and defend the defining literature you base your life around, what's it for? You don't want to discuss it because you know the contents and how bad they make you look.
I don't need to defend anything from you. I would discuss it with learned men not with ignoramuses like yourself. The point of Talmud is learning how to think and reason. I know for you it's hard to imagine to have such goal.
Heres a statistic for you: 100% of jewish boys are molested as infants by old jewish men.
Yeah, right.
Yeah the guys who create it and push it are the line of defense against it. Why is Tel Aviv the gayest place on earth again? Oh all the sex offenders escaping justice from all over the world because they are jewish.
You think that gays in Tel-Aviv are 100% Orthodox Jews? Do you understand the world we live in?
He would write a giant list of rules that contradict each other and segment every part of life into confusion. I wonder who would do that?
This thought experiment was simple. Try again, don't give up. I believe in you.

However, in the America (not the just the US) this was twisted and leveraged by criminal gangs of jews, and the jewish community still sought to protect them, causing a lot of resentment and distrust among non-jews. It's something the jewish community fails to rectify to this day although that's slowly changing. Do I think that Jewish Orthodox communities have no problems/flaws? Of course not. However, I think you overlook that because of existence of antisemitism the reluctance to air dirty laundry is stronger, because every bad apple is going to be taken as a typical for entire orchard so to speak. This thread is the prime example. We do have actual enemies who will take any opportunity to drag us through the mud and do it often. They step so low that our history of oppression is taken as a proof that we are bad people who deserved it.

I also think this reluctance is clearly overblown, because if it was really really strong, you would never hear about anything bad happening. But somehow you know and it's possible to publicly discuss it, unlike other despicable crimes.

I live in NYC and I see it at work all the time so its there and it happens. It doesn't help that the worst of Orthodox are spastic retards that get bailed out over and over again so they keep doing it until it hits the NY Post. Then there are so many that people can't help but know some so the Orthodox aren't the "other", they're just one group out of many, so those over here are fine and the ones over there were digging a tunnel, like, me and Shoshana from the bakery were laughing about it.

idk its hard to explain.
