Some people are more overt in their manipulative behaviors than others but if you watch them for long enough you can generally learn to 'read between the lines'.

Manipulation is also a tactic commonly used in any of the cluster B (dramatic) personality disorders. Here is Karpman's model for dysfunctional social interactions to look out for, the 'drama triangle'.

They're easy to spot. Just look for protruding appendages near the person's mouth that is typically to grasp, crush, or cut their food. If you see those appendages: avoid!

That's how you spot and avoid mandibled people.

Be a hostile, belligerent asshole to everyone. If a stranger so much as says "hello" to you, scream at them. Get in their face and accuse them of being scheming fiends.

The good ones with nothing to hide will cower, apologize, flee, and grovel at your feet. The bad ones who hate being opposed will get belligerent in return.

Make it abundantly clear that you are the one in control.
