How do you help a homeless person?

I just met one outside of my workplace. He was once in prison and now that he’s gotten released, he has no where to go. Is there anything I can do?

Taking this seriously, the term you want to search for is "reentry." There are organizations set up specifically to help former prisoners reintegrate into society with jobs and housing.

If someone tells you that they "can't" use shelters or food banks or existing social services for reasons, and that therefore you personally are the only one who can save them, start getting suspicious. Best case scenario is that you will gain a dependent with no initiative and an external locus of control, but probably you're getting scammed.

Thankfully there's a form of aid that's readily available in most communities that will help provide relief and is always accessible to even the lowliest of individuals: it's a program called "doing drugs". If you see any groups of shifty dudes loitering near street corners or sketchy houses being heavily trafficked by strangers at all hours of the night, point the homeless man in that direction and give him $10 to get started.

If you catch the homeless person later they'll be so relieved from the help you've given them they'll be practically exuberant! You should give them another $10 though. The welfare system being the mess it is government heroin subsidies have really taken a cut in recent years. It's a shame tbh.

You should watch your own back. Everyone from a seemingly innocent elderly woman to a young child could have insidious intentions.

The elderly woman could have done numerous foul deeds throughout the course of her life and by some cruel stroke of luck made it to live that long.

And the child, let's not forget Shoe on head's ex kicked a cat to death at the age of 10.

Everyone has the potential for evil and your home is a sacred place.

Money and food are a waste usually. Food is readily available in this country even for homeless people and a small amount of money won't make much difference. The only real way to aid is to put the time in to find out why they're in that position and help address the root problem.

It's usually drugs or mental illness so you can't do much about that, but sometimes it's not.

Tons of positions have "banned the box" asking about criminal convictions. Unless it's a position where a particular criminal conviction matters they won't even bother asking you to begin with. Like they wouldn't hire a chomo to do landscaping work around peoples' houses.

Personally I think it's BS a felony conviction stays on your record no matter what but that's a whole other topic.

Sad truth, going to jail is a product of being dumb. Intelligent criminals don't get caught often. We can't save the stupid. It's sad, it sucks, don't get involved. Even when they don't want to drag others down, it happens anyway.
