How do people manage to crack phone screens?

I've owned cheap and expensive phones. I've never used a screen protector, or any case beyond cheap basic bitch ones. I keep my phone in my back pocket, sit on it constantly, and generally don't give a shit about it. I've dropped my phones on everything short of concrete on a regular basis.

I have never cracked a phone screen. I genuinely don't know how people do it. Almost EVERYONE I know has a cracked phone screen, and I don't understand.

Please explain.

I think most visible instances of a "cracked phone screen" are actually cracked screen protectors that people haven't replaced yet. They started putting Gorilla Glass in phones, what, 20 years ago? And it's only gotten better since. But those adhesive screen protectors are cheap junk. Somebody drops their phone and cracks the 50¢ screen protector and says: "Wow, Good thing I had that on there! That could have been the actual screen!" but the phone would have been fine even if it were naked -- it's just that the "protector" is the cheapest thinnest glass that China can produce. Then they leave the broken protector on the phone until they get around to replacing it, which is exactly never.

I'm sure there are some rare instances of the actual screens breaking -- maybe people who work in a rock quarry or literally take a bullet through the phone or are otherwise exceedingly unlucky -- but most of the cracks I've seen have been in the protectors rather than the screens themselves.

Some phones suffer from extremely poor design and the screen will shatter if you ever drop them on a hard surface. For example, some Samsungs from the late 2010s had screens that were convex on the edges and extremely thin, so they were almost guaranteed to break if the phone was dropped. I'm sure there are many others but that's what I've seen personally.

There's some death spots on phones mainly the corners and edges especially on one's with curved glass.
