How do countries afford low cost education?

I think people here have made very good points, but you also have to realize that colleges in the US have nothing to do with most colleges in europe (where I'm from anyway), you guys have clubs, and debate teams, and dorms, idk who pays for all this shit.

My university had class rooms, labs and a library, that's it, there was no fluff, no extras, every event that was put together was done so by the students (and you're supposed to turn a profit) or by companies trying to recruit us. So it was fairly cheap, it costs about 20% of minimum wage to go college here, about double for a private university( So it's not even about government funding), masters degrees and doctorates are more expensive.

Germany isn't small, homogeneous, or rich in natural resources. But college is free.
You can also get some state funding for living expenses but half of it is on loan and it gets cut off if you study too long.

And you can't apply the free market logic of " if people are selling it at an inflated price, competition will eventualy crush them" because:
a) Unis rely on prestiege and tradition to attract students and professors and a good set of professors is not easy to put together
b) a college can only teach a limited amount of students at a time so you can't take in more students at lower prices to undercut the competition
Hence why for-profit education is a horrible idea.

Primary and Secondary teachers aren't payed nearly enough; that's why they fall into one or more of three categories

1) Idealists who have never known a life besides school and always wanted to be teachers. Least bad category but highest turnover.

2) People who desire to dominate someone, but no adult will respect them so they pick on kids

3) Pedos

We need to increase pay until it's a worthwhile career for people who aren't part of any three categories. Despite what Disney teaches, "Just in it for the money" employees are often the best employees.


College professors already make enough that it's a sought-after job. That's fine. If they're teaching on average just 200 students a year, their 100k salary means 5k a year in tuition. How bloody much does a bingo hall and a janitor really cost?
 
1.) Spend 1% of your budget on defense. Join NATO and let the Americans pick up the bill for you.
2.) Raise taxes.
3.) Make fun of Americans for not being able to afford college.
