Genuine question, I see Josh posted an update and he said $Sandy was doxed because they didn't use a VPN, but how did the-person-that-cannot-be-named get those IP logs?

Because Null had no choice.

They posted the forbidden copyrighted picture, were struck with DMCA. And Null had to comply and provide the logs. Which he needs to keep for ban evasion, spam and illegal shit. And now T&H and above don't get log recorded anymore.

At least that's my understanding.

The law the forum operates under only protects the forum from what users may post, under conditions. It does not give immunity to the users themselves.

Thanks for the explanation. I thought everyone here said they would rather there be no logs kept as it's better for the safety of everyone? As people posting illegal shit will be using TOR and VPNs anyway, and it rarely ever happens.

I don't recall DMCA working this way last year? Can anyone email Josh and ask for a post to be taken down and he will take it down and give out the IP logs of the user that posted it?

Illegal shit can take many forms. I am not even necesseraily talking about what we all think about. Think about fed posts, or anything that could help bring the forum down or in disrepute. You want to have that information, if even for yourself. And if a court order you to hand it over, and you have it, well, you don't have a choice.

The forum's reputation is bad and ennemies are numerous and have anything but time to waste.

At the end of the day, if we look at it from an objective standpoint:
Null told people not to do it, then locked the thread when he saw it was escalating
Actively tried to provide a defense

All for something he actively discouraged to do on his own site.

I think people should think before they act and it would save them a lot of problems.

I'm curious if we can do a poll on this, would a KF user rather be safe knowing there are no logs, or want there to be IP logs for the once every 5 years a TOR user says they are going to blow something up. I think 99% of users would say they would rather sleep soundly at night knowing there are no IP logs.

I could understand if Josh was in financial strife and so he was giving in to the demands of LFG, but he got 100 grand to take this to court, what is stopping him saying no to the requests and then saying "see you in court"?

From what Josh says on the VPN info page, he tells users to look for VPNs that don't keep IP logs. So it's legal to not log IPs. So can't Josh legally just not log IPs?

It's this guy that Josh has a legal case on, it's on the community updates area right now. Somehow this guy has the ability to take down any post he wants and to dox anyone he wants on the farms, yet nobody else can do this. This is just from a laymans point of view, I don't really understand why this is suddenly an issue now in 2026.

Section 230 means the forum is not responsible for what users do. Users are responsible. Breaking the law is breaking the law. And you're presumed innocent, but that won't stop you from being sued.

If you are stupid enough to post something you can be reasonably sued for on your own IP, it's you're problem. If you commit a crime, KF was only a medium.
