i've debated about going back into music. i've grown to have love-hate relationship when it comes to music and the industry itself. however, despite my views on it. I do wanna get better at music

one of my more favorite samples

i wanna do better but i don't know shit about music to sample better. i like making cool hiphop beatz

What are you having trouble with, specifically? FL studio is a pretty intuitive program from my experience.

I have a similar issue, but it's more about sound design and laziness than not understanding FL Studio.

bro just look up fl studio tutorials
There are some previews of "premium" courses up on YT, many are using outdated versions of FLS (a lot of "free" courses do the same thing), but if you find one you like it's usually readily available through Rutracker. In fact, I'd recommend rutracker in general for finding resources that augment and teach the ins and outs of FLS and music production in general.

I have a friend who went from having zero musical background to becoming a fairly competent hobbyist producer over the course of a summer, and it stemmed from youtube tutorials and rutracker.

That's really what I want to improve on, the sound design angle.

There are subscription tutorial sites that have some great content. One site is Sonic Academy. Most of the tutorials are Ableton specific, but even I have an easy time following along as an FL Studio user. How would you describe your knowledge of music production? Do you know some theory? Understand EQ and other fundamentals?

I know a bit of theory and generally understand some of the basic tools of sound design (filters, EQ, compression, wavetables, etc.). Keep meaning to learn granular synthesis since I'm finding it's basically a necessity for the type of music I like. That and processing the drums.

I learned a lot through YouTube (combined with playing with it on my own). There's decent tutorials out there and some of the artists I like occasionally put out track breakdowns or production tutorials.

This basically where I am! What genre(s) do you like making? I lean into the ____wave generes.

I apologize for not making it more clear, but I was asking @Osama Bin Laden where he was at. I don't think he's quite at our knowledge level.

more specifically, it’s trying to translate what i think would sound good via my mouth or head to the software

i could lay out a beat with sample, kicks, snares, and 808s with my mouth but to translate that into a DAW is something else

i’m more into hip hop but i’m more of a fan of songs that use samples. i’ve been on a sample binge recently which has made me discover more classic bands/groups

That's pretty cool man! You should share some of the stuff you've made and I can give you some advice. Do we have a thread dedicated to sharing music we've made? I've thought about making one if we don't have on already. It doesn't feel right to post in the art thread.

I really like future garage and that's what I most want to produce. The problem for me is that that genre is 90% atmosphere and complex percussion patterns and I'm most familiar with making synths.
I thought of making hardwave at one point. Maybe it would be easier to start with since it's just a trap beat and supersaws.

Here's my suggestion to get started. Record yourself making the beat with your mouth. Import it into FL Studio. Set the BPM to match, and start to line up drum samples with the beat you recorded. Once you get the hang of it you can ballpark the BPM and where the instruments line up on the bars.

As far as getting shit to sound "right," it's kind of a deal of recognizing what is off and what ways you can fix that. I'm not the best at it yet, but you start to learn as you play around. A neat trick I learned is to layer drums if you can't find something that sounds just right. It's a great way of making a more complex sound or boosting the high/low end without it sounding weird.

@Osama Bin Laden, 100% great advice here. I've done both of these things in the past when I wasn't as comfortable. Nowadays I just sing and hum while I work and get things down that way. Layering is also a great idea. If you learn EQ you can really make some awesome one shots by layering and filtering to make them fit together like puzzle pieces.

Also, I just took a listen to that song you posted. I see you're an MF DOOM fan, hehe.

Holy shit. I've made like over 12 albums and 100 songs mainly from experimenting making Aphex Twin and Tangerine Dream like songs with this DAW in just one year alone. It's a lot of fun to play around with. But FL Studio tutorials on YouTube is your best bet on getting good with the DAW.

Oh shit you make ambient? Nice!
