how is the remake by the way?
Held back by the Switch's limitations, like the joycons and gyroscoping not being able to hold a candle to what the Wiimote could do. Also the style felt more arcade like (ironic) and halloweenie than the original's dark gothic style.
The iconic kickass soundtrack was also missing for some fucking reason that the devs kept rather vague about (its said its a copyright dispute, which is confusing since how can you license the IP but not the soundtrack associated with it?). Which lead to the soundtracks feeling like "inspired" by the original rather than modern takes of them. The magician's amazing theme suffered the most from this.
Im also mixed how the zombies look, I kind of think that the original ones felt more intimidating...I think one of the many details is perhaps the lack of pupils on the zombies from the original
Just this uncanny valleyness to their appearance instead of the more "colorful" and "expressive" look of the new ones.
Also the gore feels rather cheap and inconsistent. Instead of allowing us to pick from red or green blood, they kind of decided an odd mixture by having some zombies have a green ish exposed muscle (which was only green if the blood was set to green in the original). So its very inconsistent.
Also double, this remake is, ironically, too faithful to the original in other aspects. Like the fact we dont have new stages, when you easily could have had that in the "modern" mode while we could have kept the original number of stages in the "classic" mode. One or two new stages wouldnt have hurt, the original is quite short as it is all things considered.
Also triple, the bonus and special features are a bit lacking. Horde mode is interesting and feels like could be properly challenging if a lot of its camera kinks are patched out/solved in the other ports. We can only get new guns if we save every scientist in an entire run which its easier said than done and it also feels like its a feature that should have been a reward for finishing the game. Feels a lot of work for a small reward all things considered. There are also no new playable characters outside of Rogan and G, and the PC port of the original allowed you to pick other characters with different stats so this couldnt have been a technical limitation.
I feel like its an ok attempt at remaking a game that sadly cant be ported anymore for consoles for the simple fact that its source code has been lost and thus all we have outside of the arcade version are two downgraded versions in the form of the PC and Saturn ports. There is an amazing remake in it, it just needed more time to add more features to make this a more worthwhile purchase. It also lacks a lot of the gothic charm of the original.
The light on the end of the tunnel is the upcoming PC port, which will invite all sort of modders into the scene into making improvements over the game and maybe even bringing the features I felt were missing.
So I'd give it a 6.5/10
Edit: The PC port feels like the "best" way to play it but most issues in terms of content remain the same. It does solve a lot of the technical issues tho but this almost feels like a no brainer. And the prospect of mods in the horizon do seem promising.
So the PC port gets a 6.8/10. Not a straight up 7 because the technical improvements on PC were kind of a no brainer but it still lacks a lot in the content departament.
