Apparently Lionsgate/Blumhouse wanted the OG trio to sign away the rights to their likenesses and the price was not right in her opinion. She gave a statement about it and didn't really get into specifics, but I got the impression the contract they offered gave Lionsgate/Blumhouse the right to use special effects / AI to recreate their likenesses.
I've been scorned by "woman being vague on her statements and then it turns out she was the retard and regrets her actions" way too much to think its this. She probably just wants way more money than what she is worth. Probably the boys show up in a scene or two that is the Witch mimicking them or something in an uncanny valley way because spooky horror.

Then they can use AI to make Arnie look 40 again in the next Terminator movie, and he won't even have to act. He can just collect the paycheck. I think we'll start to see stuff like that within the next 5 years, instead of just using CGI to "de-age" actors.
Full AI Val Kilmer is already set to be in the new movie As Deep As the Grave.

Why did she not just say "I'm busy in another movie and my schedule won't match up so I had to drop Blair Witch" then? holy shit
  1. Heather was harassed by people on the street often enough that it affected her life. She hadn't anticipated that level of fame.
  2. Heather resigned from acting like 20 years ago or something and changed her name, meaning if she appeared in the new film at all it would likely be in an AI-ish context
  3. The original cast already had a dust-up over their names and likenesses being used without their permission and successfully sued
  4. There was noise that the 2016 film might violate the settlement of the above but the studio successfully tap danced around it in typical sleazy corporate suit fashion so there's still tension there
  5. I don't remember details but Heather has been vocal over the years about her belief that she was mistreated by the studio during shooting and the marketing tour for the first film
So yeah I have no problem believing that the studio asked for the rights to use her name and likeness in future films and offered a pittance and she told them to pound sand.

Are the 2020s really the new Golden Age of Horror?

I saw Nosferatu, which was boring. I did not like Scream 5. Evil Dead Rise had maybe a few good scenes, but was mostly mediocre. The Substance just felt like a mish mash of grossness, arts stuff and some poltics.

There is no fun action horror or cool zombie movies.
