I also watched Smile 2 a couple days ago and agree that it was a big step up from the first one; it is essentially a retread but has an overall better story and even more of a cruel ending.

Watched Renfield and it's okay. The first third is solid, but god damn the gook policewoman (that isn't even below average looking) sinks the film, though at least the ultra violence is always fun. The whole "abusive relationship" angle is very forced and feels by the end like people justifying their own abuse.

I don't get the love for the original Ringu. It's got a legitimately great scene towards the end but it falls flat for me, and I've given it two chances.
The psychic angle is just hard to take and the majority of the legwork in the mystery aspect of the movie comes from that having the psychic really jump through most the hoops in the end and a lot of exposition.
I like The Ring better. I miss the early 2000s' "everything is blue" look films used to do. It's more of a straight up horror film. I just appreciate the tone a lot better. It's a nice rainy day watch.
I love a lot of J-horror but the most popular example of it just doesn't do much for me.

I'll also add I think Pulse should be considered the best of the j-horror lot from that time. It's gotten so much better with age and has some of the best atmosphere ever.

I prefer Verbinski's remake too. Speaking of the color grading, I recently saw a YouTube video about how The Ring was filmed that was really interesting. Most horror movies in the aughts used aggressive digital color grading to achieve the look you're referencing. The Ring didn't.

that's not so much a thing in the JP version.

also it's a stupid thing but at least one person asking about the generally odd idea of "cursed video" makes Ring movies work better for me

And I love "slow burn" horror but it just didn't do much for me. I think the problem is it's always cited as "one of da scawiest moovies evar!!!" instead of a creepy thriller, which is more what is is. I think it's the same issue I had with Don't Look Now. Really great film, just never felt like a horror movie to me. Although I think I'd love Don't Look Now a lot more on another watch than Ringu.
I also hear people say the jap version has more "atmosphere" but I just don't see it. Which is weird because I love the atmosphere in basically any other japanese horror film from that time. I think the biggest issue aside from everything else is just having every one of the victims have that stupid look on their face instead of the downright disturbing look they all have in the American one.

I haven't watched the video but thank you for that information. That's honestly really impressive looking back. The film looks great. Gore Verbinski really is underrated. I really think people were really way too hard on the Pirates trilogy at the time when I feel they were one of the last times Hollywood was really trying to make a big, unpretentious trilogy from scratch.

it's a nice enough swat at Ring, still hits the same basic story beats, but it's way more skinamax style, really not better at "atmosphere" or things, mostly noteworthy as the footnote of "the earlier movie of the story" and "Sadako has stonking big tiddies"

ACKSHUALLY afaik the Japanese movie was just called "Ring" in the original posters, trailers etc. "Ringu" is evidently something somebody came up with when it was released in the west, to distinguish it from the remake I would assume.

I like both versions of The Ring/Ringu though I think the US version is better since it has a consistent tone and doesn't have a weird transition to the credits like the original does.

I watched Oasis of the Zombies. Probably not a great sign that whenever I get around to watching one of these Worst Movies Ever I end up thinking, eh, that was okay. I got roped into watching My Old Ass the other day, and it was way worse.
