Elmo always made me uncomfortable. The sheer amount of bubbly joy wasn't infectious or endearing. It was always over the top, creepy, and grating in a way everyone seemed to realize and yet nobody openly acknowledged because it like, how exactly do I criticize the puppet on a kids' television broadcast without looking like I care too much about the puppet on a kids' television broadcast?

My mom used to not let us watch Sesame Street or Barney because she said stuff like Elmo was designed just to hypnotize kids instead of providing any real enrichment. And damn if now that I'm older I see she was absolutely correct. Now you have stuff like Cocomelon which has optimized this to a ridiculous degree by using science to attract exactly how to keep kids attention glued to the screen. It's horrifying.

It's kind of crazy how much stuff I wrote off as just dumb conservative fundie bullshit in my teens has actually turned out to be completely correct.
