Maybe evolutionary biologists know this and I'm really late, but it occurred to me the other night after a schmoke - when you scream in fear, what is it that you are doing, exactly?

You have been presented with a threat, and your reflexive response is to:

- Put up your hands with your nails (claws) pointing outwards towards the threat
- Show your teeth
- Widen your eyes
- Make a loud, shrill, terrifying noise

Screaming is a threat display. It's so ancient that it dates back to when we actually had claws, which was several species ago. We tend to forget that we are still animals, fundamentally.

The screaming is to (hopefully) alert other members of your pack/tribe. So they can either come help you, or they can escape the predator.

They used to in that era. Then sales slowed because fridges and appliances in general took a long time to break, and even when they did, they were designed in such a way to be REPAIRED, not replaced. It's the same with removable batteries in phones for a modern example. They can do it, but they don't want to. But all that leads to is heavy metals in the landfill and wasted copper

Surprised some corporate money pit hasn't tried to make home appliances on the same ethos as inkjet printers; Hone in on some specific component part to make proprietary, easy and convenient to replace, and rigged to eat shit and die every 3-6 months. Sell the machine at a loss, jack up prices on the replacement parts.

I've seen some attempts by power tool companies with smaller appliances like coffee pots and waffle irons where the power from their specific lithium power tool batteries is the blade to this particular razor, but nothing on the level of "fridge that stops refrigerating if you don't top up the headlight fluid regularly" and I half expect to see something like that soon.

It's somehow less offensive when the machine stops working because some asshole designed it to break after 36 uses than it is for the machine to stop working because you just don't have the right IoT subscription tier to access that functionality.

i've heard constant complaints about male being the "default gender" from the usual activists, but has it ever been? I thought the default gender was always just whichever one you were. always has been for me, at least, and most other female writers I've talked to
then again, most modern writers are high on the aforementioned activist fumes, so maybe my perspective is just biased
regardless- what even is the "default gender" argument. If you're a girl and your "default gender" is male then you've probably got good reason for that in-story or not (maybe you're horny, maybe you wanted to try writing from a different point of view than your own, maybe you just flipped a coin, idfk). It's such a nonsense nothingburger. Been confused for ages as to how it's actually taken seriously in any context outside of retarded teenagers devoting their lives to writing bad fanfiction.
