Hello fellow Kiwis, I would generally consider myself pretty well read when it comes to modern history, but there are a couple historical events I would like some more insight on (Spanish Civil War, Years of Lead, Yugoslavian Collapse, Ottoman Collapse). Any books on these topic would be greatly appreciated, especially if it comes from a right wing perspective. Personal thoughts are also much appreciated.

Spanish Civil War - anything by Stanley Payne. Would recommend his biography on Franco:

franco.webp

I would recommend Mine Were of Trouble, a memoir by Peter Kemp. He was a British anti-communist who went to Spain to fight with the nationalists.
It's not related to the events you mentioned but I'd also recommend his other memoir, No Colors or Crest, which is about his time working for S.O.E during WWII, where he ironically had to advise and support communist partisans in Albania, and later the Polish resistance.

Spanish Civil War -(im not going to do any of their names except franco because i forgot them kek) Spanish monarchists do an oopsy to hard this time and try to prevent spain collapsing by allowing democracy, spanish republicans win the election and oust the king immediately, the republicans were a mix bag of liberals, socialists, trotykist-communists and stalinist-communists(these last two designations are important). The Republicans create an indefinite system of social reform that ironically didn't implement any democratic values while forcing many progressive laws onto the spanish population who were rural and very catholic compared to the liberal socialists with a fedora streak, this of course pisses off the spanish population who demand democratic vote, the unelected officials socialist bureaucrats acquiesce and a hardliner right wing guy wins and starts undoing most of the reforms which pisses off the left wing city slicker demographic and hardline communists, violence erupts from the left wing who commit many terroristic acts and the right wing government loses legitimacy because of a scandal involving either embezzling or something basically overt corruption occurred and it pissed every one off and it emboldened the far left radicals to go even further, which also pissed off every one so the right wing fascist group Falange sprung into full throttle and initially had approval because they were curbstomping faggot communists but again with everything it gets out of hand and they also start behaving like faggots and going to far, the communist and socialist section of the republicans start to go full mask off and arrest and politically assassinate many figures of several right wing groups both moderate and extreme, even the falange group's leader got arrested. It becomes apparent to many of the not-assassinated members of the military that their not left wing and probably going to be purged stalin style soon since any democratic and peaceful solution has just been terminated by the republicans recent actions so the reasonable next step is to oust them before they get put into a mass grave, in comes yuh boy Franco who proceeds to curbstomp the republicans with help from Portugal and the Axis of Friendship. Important Note: a lot of left wing republicans were not a huge fan of arresting and murdering most of the moderate right wingers of whom were also members of the republicans most of these actions were done by the socialists/communists of the party who subverted it and the stalinists had disproportionate weight in the party because of the soviet union backing especially as the civil war waged on and they put most of the trotskyists and mild socialists into mass graves to further their own supremacy of the government which should be noted to liberals that with communists, never relax.

Years of Lead: member' world war 2 and that Italy was the home of fascism well the Allies kept a hand full of these guys un-executed because the Soviet Union existed and just propped up the entirety of eastern europe into puppet communist countries which spooked the shit out of Murica' and Britain. Anyways cold-war gay ops wages on and Italy has become a hot bed of socialists and commie fuckery as of late especially since the recent government made many oopsies which emboldened the commies to make their second or third shot at trying to make pizza associated with karl marx. The CIA decides to commence order 66 and spring loose many of the un-executed fascists who during this time in the 50s-60s bolstered a lot of their number and styled them selves heavily as "anti communists" on their resume to NATO and the intelligence agencies. It basically becomes a time of 1930s nostalgia because it now its far right and far left people curbstomping each other in the streets with a lot of normies becoming collateral damage, whether intended or more likely incidentally this sours a lot of the populace to the radical parties even more which stabilizes the moderate albeit corrupt and shitty government and they start doing the apprpopriate arrests with some of the members of the right wing radicals simmering down and becoming moderate politicians and dismantle a lot of the organized violence of their paramilitary groups. To further understand this read more into the CIA's Operation Gladio.

Yugoslavia's collapse: this is very simple, Yugoslavia was an artificial country created after ww1 consisted of basically most of the balkanite slavic ethnicities combined together to in theory make a functional and less likely to be annexed country in the balkans. In practice it's government had an overt preference of the serbians and thus a lot of serbian culture felt forced over the other ethnic groups namely croats. WW2 happens and yugoslavia gets put into germany's sausage maker and what comes out is a right wing croat puppet government consisting of butthurt croats who remembered the whole serbian lead yugoslavia thing and start massacring and ethnic cleansing the serbians within their vicinity. This starts a cascade where every paramilitary group in nazi occupied yugoslavia and puppet-croatian controled territories start going apeshit and begin ethnic cleansing eachother more than shooting at the german occupiers. Well except one specific communist group lead by Tito who was a half croat-half serbian and his coordinated efforts were more interested at shooting germans than massacring villagers of the incorrect ethnicities, lots of retardation and political collaborations happen with the right wing groups to Germany which sours a lot of the slav opinions of them and basically makes Tito popular, although what makes Tito super popular was his total clemency for any one willing to join him in kicking germany's ass out of yugoslavia, to keep it brief he earns himself more legitimacy than the exiled yugoslavian government and becomes the de facto leader of the new yugoslavia, however every one still kind of remembers the whole ethnic cleansings and massacres thing but Tito was so popular that he kept everything together so the moment he died everything went to shit because every one was still bitter about that previous ordeal and also their white-nigger nationalist compelled them to make their ethnicity the head honcho of the yugoslavian government which caused the smaller ethnic groups to book it specifically the croats and slovenians which cascaded to every one fucking off except the serbians.

Ottoman collapse: no one likes Turks, the end.

I wrote a thesis on Franco's economics way back. The absolute best I can say about him is that he was not a Communist.
That's the best.
He was a massive fuckup. By the time he handed power over to Opus Dei the country was on the verge of collapse and starvation from its autarky policies, and like any corporatist state all the wealth was being fleeced by the industrialists who were insiders with the regime (the iron law of oligarchy is a constant in society, but some places are worse than others).

In the end what saved his Papist shithole was becoming a playground for Yankees and Island Yankees (British people) and a Hollywood Jew named Branson, because if you can't export shit you can export tourism, so to speak, the one industry that thrives on poor, uneducated, unskilled workers cleaning hotel rooms.

"The Death of Yugoslavia" is a BBC documentary from the late '90s that is a pretty comprehensive primer, especially on the political machinations and personalities involved in the initial fracturing and breakaway states.
I cannot recommend "The Death of Yugoslavia" enough. It's a no-nonsense documentary and has some pretty fucking raw footage (if you can stomach that stuff). They also interview basically everyone involved, including prominent Bosnian-Serb leaders and Milosevic himself (IE, people who would later be charged with war crimes). It's also really easy to find for free on Youtube. There's a companion book to the documentary which I haven't read.

There's also a sequel documentary called "Fall of Milosevic" about the later Kosovo War (The Death of Yugoslavia was made right before that war started). Haven't watched it yet but hoping it's the same quality.

a right wing perspective.
I hate this meme. Historicism shouldn't bend to personal belief. The point is to study things and come to your own conclusions. If you read canned opinions which only already align with your own, what the fuck are you doing? You're just reading talking points to regurgitate later. Engage your brain. Don't outsource your thinking to someone else. It's the same as Marxist History, as in the discipline, where events are reinterpreted or examined under an explicitly classist lens. It's useless.
Yugoslavian Collapse
As someone who has studied Yugoslavia extensively, I do have book recommendations for this one. The others I definitely would not consider myself an expert in, so I will defer to others. Yugoslavia, specifically the Cold War era and breakup of the SFRY, I would consider myself an expert in. I will quote a post I made like a year ago on the subject.
The Balkans: Nationalism, War, and the Great Powers, 1804-1999 by Misha Glenny, and The Fall of Yugoslavia: The Third Balkan War, also by Misha Glenny are fantastic reads and also not as impenetrably dense as many straight historical reads.

A History of Yugoslavia by Marie Calic is also not a bad choice for a single volume thousand foot view of Yugoslavia, even if it misses some of the nuance and detail the above books have.
These are an excellent place to start. When you've read those there's some other, more esoteric reads which are equally excellent.
I wrote a thesis on Franco's economics way back.
God bless you. It's difficult for me to read about Franco's policies and not go blind with rage at the sheer incompetence of his regime.

I went in expecting to write a hagiography on another based libertarian dictator like Pinochet and Yew. Of course what I came to realize was that this faggot's experiment in market liberalization wasn't his genius, it was him giving up after failing to rule for decades.

He can't get credit for passing off power to someone else to unfuck the problem he caused.

The social policy was deranged. I may be misremembering - i don't think I've ever been able to turn up a source - but I swear that at one point I read that his government allowed honor killings. Edit: It was a crime of passion law that effectively decriminalized killing your female family members over inappropriate sex.

The most interesting part of the story was Bronston (who did not give a fuck that Franco hated Jews) partnership.

I will (begrudgingly) say there's a place for political analysis of history, but it should be treated as politics, not history. If I was a whateverist, I might want to read a whateverist interpretation of the Yugoslav Wars. But I should also be aware that that interpretation is a way to learn about whateverism, not history.

It's kind of a pet peeve I have with history books/documentaries/videos that people tend to combine history with politics and opinion. Like, I don't want the author's opinion on if NATO should have intervened in the Bosnian War, I just want to know that NATO did intervene in the war and this is what happened leading up to the intervention.

Thanks to everyone who took time to respond, I was banned for a week so I couldn’t follow up but I’ve been reading Plato. Riveting stuff. Thank you all
