Gable had some brushes with death. Flew five combat missions as a gunner and cameraman, got frostbite, and at one point enemy fire was so close it shredded parts of his uniform.

The 1908 Lisbon Regicide was the assassination of King Carlos I of Portugal and his heir, Luís Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal, on 1 February 1908 in Lisbon's Square of Commerce by anti-monarchist assassins linked to the Portuguese Carbonária, a masonic left-wing society advocating for republicanism.

This assassination intensified political instability and fueled republican sentiments, ultimately resulting in the abolition in 1910, of nearly 800 years of monarchy in Portugal.

Portugal then went into a Weimar Republic style of society and all its consequences, leading to a fascist dictatorship (Novo Regime - New Regime), which endured until 1975.
