Connecticut Fish and Wildlife officials are urging residents to be on the lookout for an aggressive new species of crawfish.

The division of the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection posted to Facebook last week after dozens of the large, invasive crawfish were reported all over the state.

“Way better boiled than released!” the post said. “Lately the Fisheries Division has fielded multiple calls about large ‘lobster-like’ crawfish loose in the environment. Many of these have turned out to be a non-native and highly aggressive ‘red-swamp crawfish’ which are easily purchased live for crawfish boils.”

It goes on to say that it is illegal to release live crawfish.

Volunteers with the Fairfield Shellfish Commission say invasive species like sea squirts and mitten crabs have been outcompeting or preying on local shellfish.

"They eat the juvenile oysters and clams and mussels, and it's a problem in the industry,” says John Short, the chair of the Fairfield Shellfish Commission.

Officials say red swamp crawfish look like baby lobsters. They say if you see any, they want to hear from you. Reach out to reach out to mike.beauchene@ct.gov.

This is because some bleeding-heart took it upon themselves to "FWEE DUH SHWIMPZ!", isn't it?

Probably. Could be some dumb kid. My nephew's class once got crayfish to care for as some kind of life sciences thing. But I imagine in an area where this would be a huge problem schools wouldn't do something like that.

Likely some nutter whose time would be better spent volunteering to save something actually endangered. But they never do that. Normal people clean oil off of ducks and tag endangered critters. Crazies release lab animals and invasive crayfish.

Either way, I'm surprised that all these racism jokes haven't become reality with people claiming that killing them is akin to racism. It is the current year after all. Anything is possible.

Because Mr. Crayfish here just wants a better life got his wife, seven kids, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and dozens of cousins. He's also go a few friends from the fields of Cray Salvador who want to bring over a few dozen relatives as well.

Nah it'll have been a commercial operation looking to raise larger faster growing/reproducing crayfish Same thing happened here in bongstan when someone wanted to commercially grow north American signal crayfish. They got out and have devastated the local crayfish species and other aquatic life.

They too promote catching and eating/killing the new crayfish but it's a losing battle.

Okay, just eat them.

I don't see the problem here.
Yeah for real, now the black population in the area just needs to get a huge pot, a shitload of potatoes, some carrots, some rice, and some collards on the side, and they can have this shit done and dusted by Sunday after church.

I'm more partial to red potatoes, corn and smoked sausage. The collards on the side can stay, though.

The invasive ones in bongstan hit sexual maturity at 2-3 years but only become edible and easily trappable/catchable at 5+ years old by which time they could have already laid 1000+ eggs. And catching the larger older crayfish lets the smaller yet still sexually reproductive ones thrive and breed more. Their eggs and very young can also stick humans and animals and can travel from river to river piggy backing.

They eat everything animals, eggs and vegetation to the point there's nothing left for the few surviving native species to eat. There exists several streams in the UK where the only real forms of life in them are Signal crayfish surviving by eating the vegetation that falls into the stream and each other. You can't even just drain the steam and pick them out by had because they can burrow up to 2 meters into the riverbank (which can cause huge amounts of errosion).

Keep the Potatoes and greens and ditch the rest. Add in some halved onions, mushrooms, garlic and halved lemons (the acidity rounds out the heat from the boil). You can add sausage but I personally don’t care for it.
