SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A frantic search is underway for high-powered explosives that have vanished from Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms—the largest United States Marine Corps base.

Officials at the Southern California base reported the missing items to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department last week. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is also on the case.

KGTV reported: Sources report that approximately 10 pounds of Composition C-4 disappeared during a long training exercise two weeks ago. They also believe the manufactured plastic explosives may have been stolen.

The unit’s commanding officer is considering extending the training exercise until the explosives are found, sources said. They also confirm the commanding officer messaged subordinate commands about a monetary reward for any information leading to the discovery of the C-4.

Spokesperson for NCIS Public Affairs, Jeff Houston, said in a brief statement, “Out of respect for the investigative process, NCIS does not comment on or confirm details relating to ongoing investigations.”

Not a good look...!

I guess it all comes down to what you would still just call "Antifa", it's not impossible that a, say RAF-like, group could pull something off like this.
(But I think it's very unlikely here.)

You could be right, and I agree the average "antifa" is doubtless like this. But I'm of the opinion that there's a core of "true believers" who are organized as well as motivated enough, ruthless enough and intelligent enough to pull off something like this. Could be wrong, of course.

But, yeah, if it got stolen cartels are probably more likely than not the culprit.
My money is on organized crime, so gangs or cartels. My second guess would be some skitzo. My third would be some political spergs.

My money is on it was misplaced during an exercise. My second guess would be a paper work error. My third guess is some dumbass wants to film an explosion for his youtube channel.

Is C4 red? That's their favorite colour of crayon.
They're the best ones because they're spicy

Shit like this happens a lot the only difference is someone got sloppy.

Turning live ammo and explosives back in is a nightmare so at the end of training people usually just expend whatever's leftover. Real easy to pocket stuff during that, I might know a guy with some C4 in his gun safe at home "just because".

I'll bet 10 pounds of anything and everything from MRE's to underwear routinely can't be found post-op all the time...

But because of "muh insurrection" now it's PANIK TIME (tm) every time sloppy paperwork means a failed equipment audit.... get used to seeing this shit for the next 4 years....

10' Step Ladder disappears from Army Corps of Engineers Building! Did it secretly go to an alt-right militia so they can climb into your bedroom tonight and murder you?

Same damn thing happened for years after 9-11, every disappearance/theft of ANY bulk quantity of ANYTHING that went 'kaboom' from commercial dynamite to stove propane to fireworks was immediately used as justifiaction to try and cancel every sporting event and holliday in the nation in case terrorists did it and were now 'planning something'.

Is it me or are these "accidents/mishaps" becoming way too habitual? I could have sworn yesterday or the day before someone made a post of a Triton missile being fired from one of our submarines. Then a few days ago 2 members of the FBI get wacked. And over a week ago we learned about how terribly the National Guard were treated.
A couple jeeps were stolen too

So on a scale of crappy shoe bomber to Beirut explosion, what level of damage could be caused by these missing explosives?

Depends on the target.

A bridge. A water treatment plant. A railroad. A power plant. An oil refinery. A chemical plant.

Enough to rob a bank or two, enough to disable most law enforcement vehicles, enough to blast holes in a few walls, enough to get an frat party high...

It's normally packaged in 1.25 lbs, so that's about 8 low-grade breeching charges.

Oh I get it, so MGS guards are smarter then. Im sure the dirty magazine would actually work on them, no joke.
The MGS are probably better.

They actually pay attention 24/7 and are always alert to pick up if some blonde twink in a semi bondage suit is doing cartwheels past a corridor.

As to regular guards not only do the get bored and loss focus thanks to technology their patrol pattern is just as predictable.

Ever see a circular piece of metal inside a mounting bracket by a door? Something like this:
guard2.jpg

As the photo might already indicate this has to do with a security guard, more specifically it is a guard tour monitoring system. While such a system allow for varied patrols most people are lazy and will just stick to a simple circuit.

Even if you were to vary it, a mischievous Kiwi Farmer could have just done a reconnoiter of a target, observed what guard monitor sensors are used, found a similar system in use elsewhere, then switched the sensors while disabling the RFID. You would think that property owner or security guard company would replace it but that Kiwi Farmer was surprised that the guards eventually skipped that area.

Meh. C4 is the good shit, but for just about any "terrorist" purpose, it can be substituted for with a slightly larger amount of something homebrewed.

It's probably laying around somewhere where it really souldn't be in depot, or they just fucked up the paperwork.

Seriously, it's not any more "high powered" than any other high explosive - in terms of "can it blow your arm off up to the elbow if you hold it?" the answer is "yes" and it's on the same level as TNT, RDX, Black Powder, Polymerized Anfo, etc. in that regard. Nothing to be any more concerned about than missing an equivalent amount of commercially-available or easy-to-cook-at-home blasting agents.

Nice "scare em straight" headline, Media.

Eh I really wouldn't consider ANFO, let alone black powder, anywhere on par with C4. But as for terrorist stuff, a big enough black powder pipe bomb with some roofing nails in it works just as well as a smaller one made out of "professional" components, so... The internet exists, and we live in a modern industrial society. With all sorts of chemicals freely available in home improvement aisle, and the glowies perpetually sniffing around everyone and everything. Anyone too dumb to roll his own bombs is also too dumb to pull of a successful terrorist attack. Or at least to survive it himself to fight another day.
