Regardless, google says its a public domain name for pretty obvious reasons. Copyrighting names for fictional characters is an absolute bitch and even the most obvious violators rarely see court since its so easy to argue some minor variation/difference in design/story/spelling of name makes the character different. No one wants to spend the money, time and effort in court to lose.

I hope so. Honestly I hate copyright with a flaming passion and I wish it would go away, or at least be stifled down to some reasonable guidelines.

I don't like the redesign, it looks less unique. Also way too much red. I hate the insistence of corporations (and now animations apparently) of changing perfectly nice designs to something blander just for the sake of pretending you're doing something useful.

That's probably not why the did it. The old designs have far too much detail to actually have competent animation done within budget constraints.

A rule of thumb in animation is that the more detail you have in your design the longer/harder/more expensive it is to animate. Its why Eastern "animation" doesn't actually have much movement or frames because they prioritize design over frame animation. Western animation prioritizes frame animation over design, preferring simple character designs to stay within budget constraints.

To a degree yes, but simple designs don't have to be bean heads every time. That is more lack of ability from creators and executives overstepping in to enforce their braindead "standards". ATLA has relatively simple designs with single color groups and only minor character details while still managing to look amazing.

An example of this not working can ironically be found in ATLA's successor series LOK, where Korra had far too much detail and the animation often came off choppy as they had to use fewer frames to compensate for the increased costs of so much detail. They finally threw in the towel in the final season as their budget was slashed to hell and back by finally simplifying her design, something better creators would have done before or even after season 1.

Bringing this back to Hazbin, these redesigns sort of have to happen. Its impressive what Viv did with her pilot, but a professional studio is not going to go through the task of animating a whole season filled with complexly designed characters with smooth frame animation without a truly massive amount of cash that her show was likely not authorized. She was likely given a choice of keeping the designs and the frame animation turning into a choppy mess, or keeping the smooth animation quality with simpler designs.

I think she made the right choice, even if I do have a preference for the prior designs.

Her last name used to be Magne, as in Charlemagne. Morningstar is pretty cliche but at least fits.

Personally, I feel like the redesign has too much red. They could’ve at least kept her pants and eyes black for contrast. Her clothes look a bit too much like Alastor’s now; that is, unless they’re revamping his look too. Though it is funny when you take into account all the critics who complained about the amount of red in the pilot.

Looking at these side-by-side, the most drastic design change is probably her hair. The old designs loosely tied back look helped give her a somewhat air-headed feel to her - particularly the three side puff looking kinda like a cloud - while the tie at the bottom indicates she at least makes a token effort towards the business end of her project.

The new design however makes the ponytail more distinct, and therefor more managerial. However while the double ties at two different points do try keep the cloud look of the original (albeit more subdued this time around) they also look distinctly performative - like someone who’s trying to look serious and distinguished, but needs to keep a tight lid on their behavior and put in extra effort in order to maintain it. I won’t be surprised if it becomes a sight gag where her hair bands begin to snap to indicate when she’s losing her cool. Kind of like a mood gauge before she goes full demon form.

It’s too soon to say if the redesign will also come with tweaks to her characterization though, so until then it’s hard to say how well it will work on screen.

I would actually disagree that Korra’s designs were too complicated compared to its predecessor. ATLA had a metric fuckton of detail what with characters often wearing multiple layers and having all sorts of ties and trimming. I think the real difference between Korra and ATLA is that ATLA knew how to work around its limitations while Korra wanted to have its cake and eat it with the same level of detail and cinematic action scenes every episode.
