There is some truth here, you can get away with it if you choose the right breed (toy breeds, greyhounds, etc.) or if you have a lot of time and know what you are doing. If you go to Seattle you see tons of medium sized dogs and I wanted to understand it, so I talked to all my Uber Saars and learned that it's because all the tech offices have doggy daycare. I took my childhood dog into my apartment for a couple weeks while my parents were away and it was not a good time for him or me. I need at least a yard big enough for them to make their business. Suburbia it's fine, that's my alarm system, some times it false positives and makes a lot of noise over the delivery guy. I put up with a lot of shit from neighbors over the years, they can put up with a bit of anti-bear barking before bed. Another nice thing about the GPS is that I can whistle her in when she is making a racket and she can always hear it (no shock necessary, just a snack when she gets to the door).

There is also the innocence about them or at least most breeds. We breed them to retain puppy traits (you can even see it in the coat colors) because puppies stay bonded to you, puppies keep learning, puppies stay near the den, puppies don't get aggressive... which gives them the big eye ratio and makes the girls go gooey.
