Has any city actually benefitted from the olympics?

Salt Lake City benefitted a decent amount from the 2002 winter Olympics. The downtown area got an improved transit system in Trax, the U of Utah got some new dorms in the form the old Olympic village and Park City got put on the map as Utah's answer to Telluride. That, and the city actually made money off of it. The Olympics meant alot for the state as a whole. To the point that the logo for the games kind of became an unofficial state seal.

I was in Japan on Business in 2019 and one thing that was interesting was every Japanese I worked with or talked to thought the Tokyo Olympics was a waste of money. It's weird because your average American has some stupid NPC fantasy that the Olympics is cultured or some other feel good buzzword. When the Chink flu happened one of my work buddies would go on and on about how hopefully the Tokyo Olympics is cancelled. Maybe you have to have a sports fan microbrain to be supportive of the Olympics.

tbh if it weren't for the fact that Greece is kind of a disaster I'd say just keep the summer Olympics in Athens. Half of the reason every city loses money on these games is the fact that all of their local athletic centers need to either be massively renovated or rebuilt every time they host. Keeping it in Greece would both provide them a recurring revenue stream and avoid having to build stadium after stadium that never get used again.
But if they just host it in Greece all the time then the IoC parasites won't be able to solicit bribes from politicians and countries who want to show off at the taxpayers expense. Won't someone please think of the executives.

Arguably Mexico City got an extensive metro network out of them, along with some enduring imagery.

Wasn’t that the same year that Mexico was really based and took out hundreds of student protestors? It’s too bad the US never cracked down on antifa or any of the student protesters here like that. :(
