A distinguished Harvard University professor is not backing down from his claims that a piece of extraterrestrial spacecraft technology may be flying past the orbit of Jupiter at this moment.

Avi Loeb, one of the top astronomy professors in the world, boasting of decades of Ivy League professorships and hundreds of publicized works in respected astronomy publications, is remaining defiant that the space object – dubbed as “Oumuamua” – first noticed by Hawaiian astronomers in 2017 could be from another civilization.

“Considering an artificial origin, one possibility is that ‘Oumuamua is a lightsail, floating in interstellar space as a debris from an advanced technological equipment,” Loeb and his colleague Shmuel Bialy wrote in Astrophysical Journal Letters in November, according to the Washington Post.

Since making the shock claim last year, many scientists have criticized Loeb for offering, in their view, the most sensationalist theory of what the object is.

“Oumuamua is not an alien spaceship, and the authors of the paper insult honest scientific inquiry to even suggest it,” Ohio State University astrophysicist Paul M. Sutter wrote in a tweet. Other scientists are more diplomatic and haven’t publicly countered Loeb’s claims, only saying that the object is likely just some sort of rock, whether it’s a piece of an asteroid or a comet.

But Loeb remains stubborn on this theory, and dismisses the claims that it’s a rock, noting that it's moving too fast for an inert rock. He told the Post that the object is long yet no more than one millimeter thick, and that it’s so light that sunlight is moving the object out of the solar system.

“Many people expected once there would be this publicity, I would back down,” Loeb says. “If someone shows me evidence to the contrary, I will immediately back down.”

“It changes your perception on reality, just knowing that we’re not alone,” he continued. “We are fighting on borders, on resources. … It would make us feel part of planet Earth as a civilization rather than individual countries voting on Brexit.”

Even as his theories attracted attention around the world, despite his colleagues’ criticism, Loeb says he’s not afraid of any possible repercussions for spreading his theories and wears it as a badge of honor, showing his unorthodox approach to science.

“The mainstream approach [is] you can sort of drink your coffee in the morning and expect what you will find later on. It’s a stable lifestyle, but for me it resembles more the lifestyle of a business person rather than scientists,” he told the newspaper.

“The worst thing that can happen to me is I would be relieved of my administrative duties, and that would give me even more time to focus on science,” he added. “All the titles I have, I can dial them back. In fact, I can dial myself back to the farm.”

Some idiot dijo:

That's not how it works. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

There are a lot of scientists who believe in silly theories. I personally studied under an acclaimed biochemist who was a Young Earth Creationist. Unfortunately, wingnuts point to these people to support their own rétarded views (crazies are all about the "appeal to authority" fallacy.) What they fail to realize is that scientists are only experts in a very specific field, and are just as ignorant as anyone else outside of that.

I hate that quote. What's an extraordinary claim? What's extraordinary evidence? That's so subjective. Evidence is evidence. The real problem with his hypothesis is there's no way to falsify it.

That's bizarre. As a biochemist he should be able to understand most of the hard evidence for evolution via natural selection, unlike everyone else that ironically have to pretty much take it on faith.

it just means bigger claims need more evidence

if i told you i had eggs for breakfast, you wouldn't need much or anything
it's inconsequential
if i told you that you were created in a lab yesterday, and all your memories are fake
well, i have some explaining to do

either way, japs point is that this scientist has to prove his idea first
i can say any shit, doesn't mean fuck all unless i got something to back it up
it looks like an alien spacecraft? okay, give us other examples of alien spacecraft
got none? oh that's too bad, assertions made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

It's the damndest thing. Thankfully, he relegated that nonsense to his bible blog, so it wasn't worth bringing up the issue. I still need his recommendation, after all.

Well, I mean...I gues it doesn't actually impact his work much at all. All the "On the origin of species" stuff is purely academic. Not much practical use. I'm assuming like most of that type he makes some kind of special exception for "Microevolution".

Religious beliefs can very easily trump scientific conclusions. I mean, he probably didn't adopt Christianity because of scientific evidence, and if he's serious about his beliefs he's not dropping them just because science disagrees with Christianity on stuff. He can always hold out hope that one day science will change it's mind.

If not moreso, I've met a few very smart people who made that fallacy, of assuming since they were undeniably smart in their chosen professional field, then they must be similarly smart in all other walks of life and disciplines of knowledge, on preexisting smarts, without having to do any in depth studying of those other fields.

Not only do they make the same layman's mistakes as the "average" person, but they also are too stubborn to admit it, since to them, that's admitting they "aren't smart". So they forge ahead defiantly and make even bigger mistakes.

Like the one relative I have who could build a military-grade radar system on the kitchen table if you gave him the parts, but also killed every one of his pets from the goldfish to the dog, by overfeeding them... refusing to admit they were morbidly fat even when the vet was telling him so. Or tried to fight a traffic ticket by bringing coefficiency of friction tables to court and being incensed the Judge didn't want to see them because they had no bearing on the fact he didn't move over for an emergency vehicle......

It's weird. Being a student in a hard science can be a very humbling experience, but the moment they get that piece of paper it's like their ego is validated and they become the most arrogant motherfuckers imaginable. A PhD is like a license to be a cunt.

Oy vey, goyim, doesn't the existence of extraterrestrial life make you want to open yez borders some more and embrace leftist policies?

I once had a relative in this category who was not a responsible pet owner. "Your cat who I love very much is obviously suffering multiple organ failure and needs immediate medical help" "but the vet is having chrismas vacation."

Needless to say that was a shitty christmas holiday.

Don't over feed your pets

Yeah, it's that goddamn Freddy Kreuger syndrome(Dunning-Kreuger really).

That's where people knowledgeable about a subject, because they know the subject is so huge and there's so much of it they don't know, tend to underestimate their own understanding of it.
A person who knows very little about a subject might be inclined to think they know everything about it, because they aren't aware of all the shit they don't know about. So they overestimate their own understanding.

I'm pretty sure that's what happening with these scientist types. They know they are smart, otherwise how could they understand their chosen science field. And hell, they know one science field, those same principals work for the other ones. It's how you get Bill Nye completely failing to understand the ideal gas law while he smugly insists he's right.

Ah, alien spacecraft near Jupiter, you see, ipso facto orange man bad.

Engineers are the worst offenders here, because every other discipline is just info.... for THEM to APPLY. Yeah, medicine is just applied chemistry.... and what's chemistry but applied physics? And what's physics but engineering?

Okay, Uncle Joe, but, I still think having gravy on everything like you do isn't the healthiest of choices for a 50 year old man with high
cholesterol.

HA! Whatta YOU know? You didn't even get a BS degree like I .... ha.... ha..... ooooh. . HURK! *THUD*

Really explains why Silicon Valley software engineers think they can run the whole planet.

Can confirm, I am an engineer. When you see that in fact, yes, everyone is a fucking complete idiot who doesn't know what they're doing, you do start to think "Well shit, I'm no dumber than those fucks".

Being proven right time and time again doesn't help. As a result, you get professional Mechanical Engineers who have studies thermodynamics extensively, yet for some insane reason they think they can build a perpetual motion machine.

I try to remember the corollary to keep myself honest. Yes, everyone is an idiot. But that means I'm an idiot too.
