I just got a QSL card in the mail from CHU for a report I sent in just before the shutdown.
I saw the LEAF on the envelope return address when I first pulled it out of my mailbox and almost instinctively ripped it up in a rage but then I remembered I actually willingly made contact with someone in C*nada.

I have a full sized server rack in the garage, kubernetes cluster in there, high availability, shit won't go down. Decided to buy a mounting plate for a spare radio (icom 706mkiig) for the rack and a speaker. Gonna permanently stick the radio in there.

From here I thought how do I control and use it. Well, I'm not about to just use a VM or regular ass computer when we have gitops and kubernetes (which are a dream to manage via agents). I have a digital interface and a CIV cable. Then shoved WSJTX into a container, tossed webVNC on it so I can control the radio from a browser. Might do the same with JS8Call. Running X11 apps in headless Xfb containers and using webvnc for an interface has proven to be a very useful operating model.

No antenna plugged into this yet, but in the pile of old projects I found a 6m yagi. The radio can do vhf/uhf as well so might pick up a vert dual band 2m/70cm and stick that on there as well. I'm overthinking how to permanently mount this to my house/roof, I think this is the step giving me the most pause.

Any other wild ideas?
 
Have the system park on 144.390 so it can collect APRS locations and messages when its idle? Maybe have it take commands/send reports via APRS messaging? like a bot?

Winlink and APRS are good ideas. I'm somewhat remote so there's very little traffic here and have mobile radios in both our vehicles so it could have some actual utility even in simply tracking my own vehicles and propegation in the mountains.

When people think of APRS they tend to only think of it as a tracking tool. Ive always found the messaging part of APRS to be more interesting. You could have your home node APRS message your mobiles when the node goes on to UPS power or your home loses internet connectivity.
Or send back a systems status report when it gets a message from your mobile's callsigns. With it hooked up to a whole ass server Im am sure you could think of something for it to do.

My APRS home node is 2 watts with an attic ground plane. You don't need your nodes to work direct to each other, you just need enough power to hit a good area digipeter to get on the network.

We are on TOR for now but if anyone is interested let me know your availability for another JS8 KiwiNet on Saturday, August 8th. This time we will try both 40 meters and 20 meters at 3 scheduled intervals, and my setup is now much better equipped for DX'ing

Doublet is a dipole fed with ladder line. A G5RV is a specific configuration of a doublet, as is the ZS6BKW, double zepp and so on.

Where the ladder line meets coax, or an unbalnced tuner, you need to place a 1:1 current balun as coax and most tuners are unbalanced, so the ladder line will radiate and you will get a lot of RF in the shack.

You can make them that way or you can make one with wire, like above. They both do the same job.


Coax ones are better for end feds and the like, the above is better for dipoles and doublets.
 
How do i stay interested in ham radio
It waxes and wanes for me. Finally got my 6m beam assembled after it sat in a box for 5 years. I like to snag an antenna or radio for a rainy day then some lazy Sunday it'll hit me like a bolt of lightening what to do with it. A hobby to age into.

Kubernetes radio cluster update: have WSJTX JS8call fldigi and migrated to WaveLog from ccqrqc (or whatever its called). Going to add x11 forwarding so Im not tied to the webVNCs. Haven't even begun hooking the radio up yet but going ape shit on the operational side of things, playing my trade.

Trying out Akri so I can plug the digital interface for the radios into any node and the USB device is shared across the cluster. Never done that before. Will be cool to have high availability digital radio ops in a rack. This solves a real problem for me (lots of stupid USB devices for home assistant) and would be nice to see it trickle down into radio. Planning out home assistant automations to build when the radio is on e..g alert my phone when it seems a band I'm monitoring is opening

Thinking about an sdr server now too. Last I tried it out (8years ago) it was okay but the UIs sucked. Would love to share out my rural radio rx to my condo bound pals. Have a spare airplay and airplay HF upverter, would need yet another antenna 🤔, rx only good HF antenna recs? No trees around me but outbuildings with 20' or a little more of height. Random long wire with a high as shit feed point?
