It's arguably even worse than just that. All of this just so they could have an incredibly shit 'fight' scene between Chief and a Flood Tank that completely destroys the tension of the final escape. The Autumn's about to explode, but Chief and the flood have enough time for this little gay slapfight.
During the fight Chief is unable to use the assault rifle because it falls out of Reach.
Butterfingers!
He then shoots it with the magnum Keyes gives him.
Throughout the game this magnum is brought up a few times. Keyes gives it to chief because he wants it to reach his daughter, Chief tries to give it back when he rescues him from the Covie ship, and it comes back for the finale to kill the Flood Tank. Chief even holds it up and nods to Cortana after doing so, like a wink to the audience. "See? Good job Keyes gave us this pistol at the start of the game."
Oh, that's another weird thing. Chief keeps slotting Cortana into little pedestals and whatnot so she can walk and talk for a few seconds in a cutscene before he just puts her back in his helmet. There is no reason to do this. What if you get attacked mid-conversation and you can't pick her back up? But I'm nitpicking at this point. It might've been a thing purely so chief can nod at her in the ending fight.
TLDR: The Longsword was made a 1-person fighter so Chief can fumble grabbing his assault rifle.
