I understand that the French did actually manage to get compensation in exchange for diplomatic recognition.
The Haitians, or rather the pale swine who coon for them in the academies, blame that debt for the failure of their country, rather than the political instability, tinpot 'empire' of Haiti and daffy duck attempt at an imperialist conquest of the Spanish half of the island, now the Dominican Republic.
You can't help but see in Haiti an awful foretaste of the planet's future, a sea of brutalised locusts tentatively ruled over by a handful of Semites and their degraded white compradors, butchering each other and gobbling offal while the masters enjoy the rarer cuts of nog meat. 😹

The Haitian government appears to have hired Erik Prince (Blackwater founder) in a move to bring mercenaries into the country to fight the gangs. Interesting move certainly, we'll see how that one works out, seems to want ~150 mercs according to the news, supported by helicopters and drones carrying explosives (reportedly already in use by mercenaries since march). I think a dedicated unit of western troops could do some serious damage in support of the useless and corrupt local police, but I am curious to see how this particular operation is to be planned and executed given the small numbers and urban terrain.

It is pretty insane to be using kamikaze explosive drones to kill civilians, gang members or not. A grim view of our own future perhaps, coming from a nation stuck in the stone age.
Shows just how bad the situation is for the MSS and police forces there, and if the gangs manage to even get one copycat attack off against the police (they have supposedly been caught attempting to purchase drones in the Dominican Republic for just that purpose), that'll probably cause an immediate collapse in morale. Then the bad times are over, and the Barbecue age can begin.

Was Haiti okay under Papa and Baby?
It was a dictatorship with a secret police force that suffered from a severe brain drain (a lot of Haiti in professional fields left the country). Papa Doc also apparently confiscated peasant landholdings and gave them to loyalists although even with that in mind he did upset the mulatto elite of the time and maintained support from the rural Black population in the country. As for Baby Doc, he was very corrupt and lived in luxury while his country suffered with poverty. It doesn't seem like either of them were the "ideal" type of dictator.
