I love gyros, but I hate tzatziki. HATE it. I occasionally order it to try to acquire a taste, but it’s always terrible.

There’s a simple fix: substitute mayo. It’s fantastic with the lamb, lettuce, onions, etc, but the few times I’ve requested it outside of my normal Greek pizza shop, I get looked at like I’m nuts.

Is this just a ghetto thing I picked up in the city?

Eh - if you don't like cucumber, tzatziki is probably not going to be your cup of tea. You could always try shawarma sauce (typically yogurt, tahini, lemon juice, garlic and some herbage, though I've seen some that skip the yogurt altogether) instead. It may have an actual name, but I've only ever had it with shawarma.

I don't know if it's "a ghetto thing". You might be interested in toum, since it's similar to mayo with garlic, but without the egg. It's used in several lamb-based dishes in Lebanese food.

I can't imagine having a palate delicate enough to be put off by cucumber. It's like the least offensive vegetable on the planet. His gripe has to be the lemon or dill or something

Sauce is a sensitive balance, it's easy to have too much or too little. Perhaps order it on the side and try to add as much or as little as you want.

I mean, of course you'd hate tzatziki made in USA. You should have greek produce (cucumbers/red onions/dill) and good Fage yogurt (pronounced faaa-yee), and greek meat.
So, just come to Greece or put another dip in your gyros (pronounced yee-ros not gyros), like plain yogurt sauce or honey/mustard.
In Greece we also put tyrokafteri, which is a dip made of feta and spicy red peppers.
