Let's Sperg Gundam abandonware and related vidiya - Giant killer robots and old vidiya, with some of the games being old enough to legally drive

Weren't most of the Gundam games just weeb shovelware?
I'd say that most entries are pretty decent in their own right.
The only crappy ones i can think of are New Gundam Breaker, some mobile entries, Crossfire(when you run it on its native hardware), which is a rather small number, given the absurd amount of Gundam's licensed games.

As for the rest, there's more than enough to suit most people's needs. Anything from first person shooters(Rise From the Ashes), third person shooters(Lost War Chronicles), and beat 'em ups(Gundam Musou) to grand strategies(Gihren's Greed). There's even a super famicon game that plays a bit like metal slug(Kidou Senshi Victory Gundam) and fighting games too(both 2D and 3D).
Mind you, most of them are in Japanese, though there's guides and the good old trial and error to help you with it.
On 30th, we're gonna get the Gundam Battle Operation 2 PC port, so if you like the heavier type of mech games, it's right up your alley(and free to download)
If there were any on the Nintendo DS and or GBA
Now onto the DS and GBA releases.
notable Gameboy Advance entries:
-Gundam SEED Battle Assault and its SEED Destiny Battle Assault sequel- conventional 2d fighting games. They're fun, though i like their PS1 couterparts more, due to which robots are in the roster
-SD Gundam G Generation Advance- a SD G Generation game. In short, it's a grid strategy in the vein of games like fire emblem, advance wars or front mission. you have your teams, pilots, machines, and in the case of DS, 3DS and GBA, the combat animations are isometric.
-SD Gundam force- if you fancy a combination of a beat 'em up and a platformers, this one has you covered
-Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Tomo to Kimi to koko de(友と君と戦場で in nippon letters)- this one's listed as a strategy, but you mostly just fly around with a robot, trying to hit enemy units with a lock-on circle, which in turn lets you beat the living daylights out of them

notable Nintendo DS entries:
-SD Gundam G Generation DS and G Generation Cross Drive- you're basically getting G Gen advance, but with a bigger roster and a lot of features/gimmicks that make it a lot different from other G Gen games(like a different grid, reworked unlock/research system, custom unit combat formations and so on)
-Gundam 00- a floaty third person shooter. in some aspects, a bit similar to another century's episode. not my cup of coffee, but some might like it
-there's also Emblem of Gundam(strategy game) and SD Gundam Sangokuden(a 3D beat 'em up), but i haven't looked into either of the two too much.

on a semi unrelated note, there's a short, CGI-animated series(graphics-wise, it's like a mix of PS3 cutscenes and Polar Express) called Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO, in case you want to watch giant mechs and war crimes without having to interact with anime whatsoever

Have a nice rest of your day,

I never played any of them. Though I never watched Gundam since I don't do anime. If there were any on the Nintendo DS and or GBA I might have some of them on my DS piracy cart or my GBA Everdrive. I don't know if they are Gundam or just general mech games.

I did play some of the Front Mission games. I have the remaster or whatever it is on Switch.
There's actually a fair mount of good gundam games. And I have heard of a couple good looking strategy games for the DS and GBA. Emblem of gundam always interested me.

Girhens greed is pretty good. And a lot of the Generation SD gundam games along with super robot wars are cool.

The problem was japan kept most of the good stuff for a long time. We got a couple ok early 2000's games up until Seed failed in the west. Then there was a LONG drought were nothing would get translated until recently.

A lot of them still dont get get sold officially because of license reasons, instead they make it so you can buy it overseas with english subtitles.

Here's my two most-recent game acquisitions, both of which being turn-based grid strategies of the SD Gundam G Generation franchise

At long last, i got all the ROM files needed to run the G Generation F game for the PS1.
Vimm's had only the disc 1 so i had to search a little harder, but now i have all three disc files so that i can play the Sentinel and Crossbone stages.

that's right, this one has actual proper story campaigns for even the side stories(which is a little similar to what G Gen genesis does, but this one covers most entries made, up to 2000). Even the super niche manga stuff like the Double Fake is included within the playable roster.

Another, albeit marginally less impressive piece i recently acquired and managed to run is the G Generation Portable, which feels like a more streamlined spiritual successor to G Gen F and some other entries from the PS2 and PS1 era.
It does cut down on the roster a little bit, though it retains story modes for a lot of AU entries, such as Gundam Wing, Gundam X and G Gundam.
The UI is definitely more streamlined, though it can't beat Overworld and the newer ones. You do get the roster of Gundam SEED, MSV astray, Destiny and X Astray, which might be a good or a bad thing, depending on your views on that series.

I should definitely try and look into the PS2 entries and games on older consoles at some point, so that i can get a closer view on the franchise's gradual evolution. It'll probably take ages, but if i ever manage to do so(given that i already have quite a hefty backlog of stuff i want to work on),
it would probably make for a decent video or a thread post.

I hope y'all are having a great summer,
Best regards,

On a related note, i had expanded the Gundam Assault Survive master chart's unit weapons sub-chart with F91's Federation units. Still gotta lab the Raflessia in order to finish up on the crossbone vanguard machines.

TLDR: The decline of recon-type mechs in the G Generation series:
[Autism Ahead]
Speaking of the SD Gundam G Generation games, there is a phenomenon i saw thoughout the entries i've played so far, that i found quite interesting.
Oddly enough, the thing that lit up the proverbial lightbulb were the Gihren's Greed games. You see, in the GG games, you can use ships and certain units to scan an enemy unit to 'discover it' and view its specs(and if i'm not mistaken, it also gives you some advantage against it)
1687973458656.png
1687973478628.png

Now, in the earlier games like G Generation F and Portable, the gameplay loop is heavily balanced upon the composition of your MS teams and the synergy with your ship. While the chance step limit is gone, health, hit rate and energy pools are drastically lower than in other games. At the same time, the ship provides a radius within which your evasion and accuracy stats are increased(and if you're familiar with the series, shoving your units back into the ship recharges and repairs them). Master units are more or less the same, save for the stat changes i mentioned earlier.
As a side note, this is also the reason why units like the gundam, braw bro, guntank and several others do have an emergency escape system (sort of like in the newer games, the Magella Tank's turret detaches when the main body is destroyed).
1687974797846.png

In their rosters, you can find designated reconnaissance units like Ebirhu-S, AWACS DINN, Zaku Flipper and Recon Type, EWAC Zack, EWAC Nero and the Bloodhound hover truck, all of which having a similar accuracy-increasing field, albeit smaller than the ship's accuracy buff radius.

1687976278404.png
1687976327766.png

Additionally, once the option parts became a thing(yes, the screenshot is from portable, but there is hardly any later entry that don't feature it as well), you could technically enhance any other unit with it, adding the same effect that you'd get from having recon units on the field.
1687976436818.png

Three years later in G Gen World(haven't played 2007's Spirits and Cross Drive, so i'm using G Gen World as a reference point), the random part drops upon stage completion turned into random part unlocks upon stage completion(as seen in Overworld). So once you have an EWAC part, you can always hop into the shop and buy one from the game's shop from the currency you earned in missions.
The graphics went up as well, meaning that not only was the process of getting EWAC parts became easier, the roster size did have to adjust and in the name of optimization, many less popular units were cut out(so no more GM Aqua, Zaku Minelayer, Victory bikes or Hobby Hizacks).
These two factors made designated recon units a rather scarce group among the rosters of the later games.
1687978420989.png

To my recollection, the hover truck(bloodhound) stayed all the way 'till Genesis(no i'm not playing G Gen Eternal on mobile to check), Ebirhu-S last appeared in overworld and the Long Range Reconnasaince GINN came back in Cross Rays(and unlike its overworld appearance, it had the EWAC ability). On one hand, it is understandable why a lot of them got cut out, but at the same time, the less rational part of me wants the googly-eyed scout bots back.

I have a question. Can you explain how to win girhens greed along with tips and tricks?
I haven't played any of the GG games long enough to know about the in-depth stuff, but here's what i know thus far from playing a patched copy of Menace of Axis V
The main objective is, obviously to capture every single area on the map, which nets you a victory(though if certain events occur, you just end up advancing to a later era. Admittedly, there are wiki guides with routes for each ending.

-Difficulty settings don't make the AI dumber or smarter(at least i didn't notice a difference), they just alter the resources and tech you have access to(i'm talking Gaplant, Gabaldy Beta and BD-1 on turn 1 of one-year war if you start on Very Easy. That said, it's just a headstart)
-Technology development and surveillance are done on a quasi-levelling with new research plans coming in once certain tech levels reach a certain threshold(depending on the amount invested, the progress gauge will move a specific amount every turn)
-Assigning pilots to unit makes them perform better, but the pilots have permadeaths(some development plans/tests can also kill them, such as continuing the hildolfr and zudah project. you get the units but jean-luc duvall and demeziere sonnen die) They do level up and increase their stats
-Units stacked on top of one another attack and target as one
-The only two ways of capturing an area is to capture all its strategic point(which instakills every enemy unit in the area when done successfully) and to wipe out all the enemy forces stationed there.
-Stats and abilities of everything can be viewed during all phases
-If your units occupy an area where enemies are present, a battle phase starts each turn. this plays like a 5-turn g generation stage on a hexagonal area.
You have 5 turns to fight and you often won't resolve a battle within that time, so it's okay to keep the enemy stalled
-When starting OYW as Federation, spam the shit out of type 61s
-Attacking, capturing points and related stuff costs supply points(basically the GG equivalent of G Gen's energy)
-You can scrap units for resources
-Komusais and HLVs are your main ways of getting onto and out of earth
-Units can be retrofitted into other units(also loadouts can be changed in ships, HLVs and there's probably other ways)
-Occupying neutral zones, even moving through them decrease your reputation
-There is a reputation mechanic. Haven't messed with it too much, but going in either direction, you do get specific pilots and bonuses from what i've gathered
-Zones with a circle icon on it can produce units
-The plans tab contains stuff like Speeches to buff your troops, various military operations and heavy taxation(that trades reputation for the game's two currencies/resources)

When i get back to playing the game, there will probably be more. There's wikis and such and I know a fellow that plays Menace of Axis a lot, so i can go ask them too.

At some point, i should definitely try and reformat my notes and charts pertaining to the Gundam Battle series into something more digestible.
While i'm currently doing a brief guide to Asshimar from Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam, i'll put it on my to-do list, so that i have stuff to lab out and script when i get bored.

On a related note, i tried looking into these two - the Zeta Plus C1/2 and the GM III (EFF specs)
MSZ-006C1;2 Zeta Plus C1;2.PNG
RGM-86R GM III(GM II EFSF Colors).PNG

The former being Sentinel's C1 whose head got upgraded using A2's components and the latter being a GM III configuration that features GM II colors and replacing its regular shoulder missile pods with optional equipment(a box-shaped missile launcher whose projectiles are smaller in size, yer larger in quantity).
Oddly enough, either of the two barely appear in anything(though i did find some tidbits on the JP side of things), which somewhat complicates my search for related details.

I've managed to get my mitts on Gundam Breaker 3, which is such a huge step up from NGB it's not even funny. Nicely scratches my mech building autism till Armored Core 6 comes out.
I'm having a surprisingly hard time getting my hands on a rom/iso for Another Century's Episode R. Anybody have any places they recommend looking?

Romspure.cc and Vimm.net have the ROM for it (and there's probably more sites that have it as well). I haven't tried running that game on RPCS3 yet
(so i have no clue about possible issues related to running that ROM), but the download link does work on those sites.

Favorite vidya mech is still Jehuty. Few mechs have made me feel like a proper anime protagonist like that one.

Favorite overall is still the VF-1 Valkyrie from Macross. Yes, there's sexier transforming mechs, but the Valkyrie is just iconic.

The zabanya is always going to be the most kickass suit in existence for me, Nothing else matches it in my mind for sheer practical beauty. It's got wings made out of funnels and it can take on an entire army of aliens by itself. What's not to love?

Videogames are a bit harder. ZOE was always the best on the market. I have an irrational fondness for gundam crossfire though. That was a undercooked little gem when it came to playing as a feddie. being able to manage your suits, pilots and fire every weapon in your gundam at once was neat

Always had a soft spot for the Asshimar, the BurglaryDog and a lot of jobber units from multiple mecha series.

Vidiya mech-wise, i do enjoy the various ACs from the AC series, the Efreet Kai, Gelgoog Ground Type(LWC ver.) and Red Alert 3's Sickle

Haven't written here in a while, mostly being kept busy by other shit, but recently, i have been looking into the Wonderswan installments like SD G Generation Gather Beat, Gather Beat 2 and Monoeye Gundams.
They generally play like G Gen Advance and you get to use game-original stuff like the GM Juggler, Gazarello, Ez8 Kai and Sisquiede
1719810695007.png

(Pic.1 Upgrading a GM into GM Juggler using the All-range operator, Gather Beat 2)

I also took the liberty of importing the 2002 preorder-exclusive disc for Monoeye Gundams, uploading its contents onto the internet archive

Have a nice day fellas
