The new artstyle looks extremely generic. And I think the best thing about Guild Wars is atmospheric gothic looking map designs. Now it looks like Highguard Mmo

Guild Wars 2 at the start was great until the story progressed and we're lead by Saturday morning cartoon kids and Taimi Deus Ex Machina. Them more and more modern politics content like Yao.

And sadly the generic artstyle sells really well with certain audience. that clay Sims 4/Overwatch/Fortnite look was popular but Highguard problem is that it's another hero shooter without anything new, so perhaps if the gameplay is -ok-, it's going to get audience, but it's not going to get my money.

I don't expect GW3 to be anything more than Unreal Engine slop at this point. It lost any uniqueness the series ever had

Its set 1,000 years before the first in the actual guild wars so that means the old pantheon. Abbadon and Dhuum included. There's some mild potential to be something but I'm keeping expectations rock bottom.

So that means Sylvari and maybe Char/Norn aren't playable in this game, woohoo. Let me guess next they will say that it will be classless with half as many abilities and twice as non-cosmetic mtx. The only things new here are a man running up a wall and playable bears.

Charr probably won't be, nah. Norn there's no reason for them to not be around they existed in the past but were as irrelevant as they are in 2.

A playable bear is at least something but it's small.

I like that it's colorful and fun looking, but the fact they're only leaning further into the "free-form" (dogshit, weightless) movement concerns me.

I found the lead artist's portfolio. GW2 is literally just his style 1:1. It's like H R Giger literally being the look of Alien.

You can tell all the talented artists/writers/composers are gone, all they have is the generic pink/purple-washed UE5 modern cartoony gruel. Even the slightest bit of grit is not allowed anymore.

>become a Vaelwarden

Vael.... veil.... warden... guard? A veilguard, perhaps?

Time for Dwayna to show up and go "sooooo.... I'm nonbinary with she/they pronouns".

I was a huge player of GW1 and GW2, the latter mainly on base game and the first few xpacs. IIRC it was during the scarlet shit that people started bouncing and more and more trannies took control. The artist that worked on the stupid vine dragon expansion was in my guild (asian tranny and insane). I remember at one point during GW2 whoever was running the show had to publicly admit that he has run the ship ashore.
I loved playing gw1 so much and was so keen for gw2. My stupid bonus things were almost maxed out I'm only missing like 2. I had so much fun during gw2 beta and the base game. So much fun. It still makes me mad how mismanaged Guild Wars is.
Seeing people excited for gw3 is typical but disappointing. Anet is dead.

Either they have to simplify the combat, buffs and rotations to accommodate even more weightless physics, or they'll double-down and it becomes near-unplayable. How many mmos came and went, branding themselves on not being as "slow and rigid" as WoW? Nobody wants to spin their mouse around 3 times just to kill a boar.

This wallrunning shit better be an exploration tool and not a combat mechanic but of course it will be. Wonder if they'll put in some kind of legacy system like GW1 -> GW2, else all those thousands of dollars of cosmetics you put into GW2 is straight-up wasted.

TL;DW After VoE story is over they say they will spend the following year patching/changing old content, like the Zhaitan fight and a new WvW map. And AFTER GW3 release they will keep yearly expansions going.

So far I'm not hype for Guild Wars 3: Highward 2. I just hope its closer to GW1 so that it doesn't cannibalize too much of the GW2 player base.

Wait they never went back to unfuck the Zhaitan fight?! It was so horribly boring and underwhelming I'm a little boggled to hear they never touched it up in all these years.

I picked up the game again after a long break, and I am currently leveling a Necromancer. Also, good to hear that ArenaNet intends to support the game for a long time.
The beta for GW3 will be interesting, but I expect a trainwreck.

Sadly they can never unfuck the terrible writing and political virtue signalling because that's going to be bigoted retcon. but 'Yao, the agender engineer' (male-shaped in game, voiced by a pooner) is going to age badly in the next decades. Guild Wars 1 has some designs that do feel a little dated (like goth Kurzicks) but it'll never age that badly, I can tolerate Jormag being neither male or female because it is a dragon made of magic and you can imagine it to have inhuman biology. but the Yao bit is so gratuitous to me because it doesn't fit with the setting, and it doesn't really explain how gender culture works in Cantha. At least explain how it works instead of having the character being simply 'representation' of American politics. (There's a troon mesmer and I let it slide because he used illusion magic to appear female. At least that's in-universe logic).

I'm glad they'd go back to fix old content like Zhaitan though. At least they managed to get Season 1 back in a playable way. There's a little hope that GW3 might come out better than it looks in term of gameplay though, but i'm not optimistic.

I started with GW2 back in 2012, then went back to GW1 to get the Hall of Monuments and I'm impressed that there's a clear artistic lineage they had. the early GW2 was so fun

NO RURIK = NO THANKS

actually mad props to anet actively developing gw1 and gw2 still. gw1 remaster was handled really good. its a shame absolutely nobody in THE GAMING INDUSTRY will follow their example

It's become a meme in GW2 circles. If someone asks about starting the GW2 story it's mandatory to apologetically warn them about it.

I'm not going to defend the Zaitan fight but it does seem to be the epitome of too little too late. Assuming they keep to their timeframes, GW3 at least in beta will be available within months and we all know they will be desperate to get GW3 out of beta and generating income ASAP. I can see a significant part of the then still active GW2 playerbase going back (once and once only) out of curiousity/completionism but is fixing this fight really going to result in meaningful numbers of potential new players buying and paying GW2? Seems far more likely that any new GW player will just dive into GW3.

I don't doubt that a proportion of the GW2 playerbase will stick with it but, unless GW3 is an abject failure, I don't see how the vast majority of GW players won't move over to the new game. These games are time sinks so the numbers of those "fully" concurrently playing GW2 and GW3 (ANET's ideal) will not be significant and if the choice is between GW2 and GW3, again subject to GW3 not being crap, the vast majority will choose GW3. And that is what ANET want and will subtlely push. If ANET didn't think they could extract more money from more players from making GW3 as opposed to just continuing GW2, GW3 would not be happening.

My expectation is that GW2 will wither on the vine with ANET pushing for GW3 to be it's replacement for most GW players. It will become a niche within GW which is itself a niche. How quickly that happens will largely depend on how good GW3 is at launch and in the year or two following but I'm sure "that's the plan".

The talk about continuing GW2 expansions and especially the talk about revisiting GW2 sequentially fixing/patching old problems I see as primarily a PR exercise as ANET try to whip up excitement for GW3 without killing player interest (and expenditure) on GW2 - it's not a dead game, honest guv. I don't doubt that they will be true to their word at least until GW3 is established and fully expect the Zhaitan fight to be reworked. "Fixed" I'll reserve judgement on! But, and it's a big but, I will be astonished if ANET has not significantly scaled back this exercise after a year or two and certainly well before they get to the second half of Icebrood Saga which requires far more "fixing" than Zhaitan ever did.

Not closing shop on GW2 means 3 will be a lite alternative. Like playing the "minigame" jobs in XIV compared to real classes. Somewhere you go to unlock skins for GW2.

I mean, great. You can have an entire mmo franchise on steam; 1 2 and 3, easily in/uninstalled as interest comes and goes. Installing bnet for wow is honestly 90% of the reason I hate playing WoW.

I see it less like trying to get new players into the game but rather as a QoL in general. But GW 3 launches next year into Beta and depending on how that one is going to be close to release it could be 6 months, a year maybe even more. GW 2 is still their moneymaker so investing into it is a reasonable thing to do.

My expectation is that GW2 will wither on the vine with ANET pushing for GW3 to be it's replacement for most GW players.
The beta will probably tell us a lot and if GW3 will be able to replace GW 2. But doubt that because I don't see what ANET could come up with that is better than GW2. What exactly will be the big hook to draw people in ? Not to mention how much content will be there at launch to keep people playing, and how fast can they pump out new stuff to maintain the player base so it can spend money on the game.
