Growing Out of Video Games

I definitely lost my patience for games who waste your time.

MMORPGs, open world with repetitive tasks, I don't want to spend hours on end so that at one point, eventually, I get to reach that one good moment when the game is fun and all I have done is worthwhile.

I didn't play anything for any significant amount of time for like 5 years. Like, I'd buy something, enjoy it for like 20 minutes, then just turn on TV or something instead. None of it caught my interest anymore. So I just stopped pretending I liked this shit. Then the pandemic happened and now like, what the fuck else am I gonna do all day? Now I'm becoming one of those weird manchildren who buys whatever steam has on sale and wastes every night like that.

Still I can't play your typical AAA shit like COD or even "good" games like Dark Souls or whatever. It's basically all just sandbox style things where I can put the sound on mute, put on a podcast or something, smoke weed, and just dick around until I get bored. I think another thing I learned is that plots for most video games are absolutely fucking atrocious garbage, so any game that revolves around a story is probably going to be terrible by default.

I bought Squad last week and I'm pretty into it. Get to play soldier with ex-British army people who for some reason treat this like real life and get very mad at you if you don't. Meanwhile I'm just stoned as fuck and I'm like "yes sir! I will do that thing you told me to do that I don't understand because you're from Wales! On the double! God save the queen!"

Centralized servers and competitive matchmaking has killed any desire I ever had to play multiplayer.
Cinematic gaming has also killed my desire to play most single player games, it's just so fucking dull.

No, not grown out of them, but i have become massively disillusioned with them. I still find myself genuinely enjoying games from about 30 years ago, perhaps even more than i did when i was a kid, but the excitement i had as a kid for new releases is just dead. Every goddamned aspect of games now just feels so damn soulless now, like the companies themselves would rather be doing anything else than making a video game. Fuck, even something as simple as buying a video game has become exponentially harder because the consumerist whores that are being cultivated have been conditioned to treat them as works of fucking art, and are arbitrarily priced as such.

Playing anything made before 2015 or so really drives home how absolutely shitty the game industry is now. I think that's why I didn't play anything for awhile, I didn't realize you have to actually look now for anything worth a damn. I think it started dying when microtransactions became a thing and then fortnite came along and just totally destroyed what was left. Now everything is a really shitty battle royale shooter.

SteamFest kinda rekindled my hope.

Like, check these games out:

I really only enjoy FromSoftware-esque games now, which is ironic given that I have zero patience anymore. I'll enjoy chill games too that I can pick up and drop with ease, but that's pretty much it. I've grown cold to most stuff.

It's the same thing with movies where I need to be blown away by them, otherwise I find them to be boring, irritating wastes of tine.

There was something magical about games that has just disappeared.

I've been playing a lot of PS1 games lately, and I still feel it when I play those games. I guess call it nostalgia but it just feels different.

Now everything is too corporate, by the numbers, "cinematic" etc. etc.

I think people just used to have more fun in general. These days gamers bitch about everything and nothing and there's this idea that something is only worth money if you pack as much random bullshit into it as you can to the point every single action is complicated.

The original Doom is still a better time than the witcher or whatever for that reason.

Yeah, like I remember how there was a retarded concept that started floating around maybe a decade ago that a game isn't worth the money if it doesn't hit a threshold of at least $1 per hour's worth of playtime, which is a terrible terrible terrible way to judge a game's value.

I like playing video games, but a game either being too politically motivated (whether left or right, whichever way the industry decides to spend the next five years leaning), or just too damned hard to play take out the fun for me. I guess I'm just a filthy casual, but I want to have fun playing my vidya, not turn into a competitive sport that takes years to study. If some people want to play seriously I have no issue with it, but sometimes I feel like I need a goddamned degree to figure out half of the new games.

Yet again I wasn't allowed to play video games until I was eight, and I must've been ten or eleven when I was first introduced to something beyond basic arcade style games. Until then I had two bootleg Chinese cartridges filled with 70-80s arcade games and foreign platformers reskinned with Mario and Sonic that I played on a used Gameboy colour. Basically, I'm really behind the learning curve on how to play more challenging games, as that's not what I grew up on. Hell, Battle City is probably the only tank-related game I'm decent at.

Also microtransactions suck, but I'm pretty sure everyone from professional game streamers to Candy Crush moms can agree on that.

Typing this out I got nostalgic for the Battle City port I played as a kid, so I'm pasting a video that closest resembles mine into this post (mine was the same as the one in the video, but with colour). I haven't though about it in years. Reminds me of being on a car trip and not being able to see my screen thanks to the midday sun.

I stopped playing video games when I was like sixteen. I literally just sold all my shit one day, never gamed since.

Hard to say what it was exactly, but I just found the entire thing so pointless. Mindlessly staring into a television/screen for hours on end like a fucking retard, playing a game that was meant to be completed a certain way, mashing buttons repetitively like some kind of spastic.

Then there's the 'illusion of accomplishment' aspect to it, wasting so much time, and spending handsome amounts of cash in order to do so.

And lol at the faggot who said games are superior to books.

As much as I've come to love vidya games, they are absolutely a massive waste of time.

People I know constantly ask to read things I write. I'll let you guys reading my gay ass long posts be the judge as to whether I'm a good writer or not, but I'm apparently good enough that everybody and their fucking uncle keeps making the mistake of trying to "encourage" me and show them things. "Oh...uhh, yeah I'm still working on that, maybe another time". But no, I'm not "working on that". I haven't in 3 months. I'm pretending to be a viking warrior instead like a wee little baby.

Video games rot your brain and make you more boring and stupid. All the most depressed people I know play games constantly. Luckily I fucking hate my brain anyway

I can't play multiplayer games anymore, I just don't care about "getting good" at a game enough to beat a tweaked out 14 year old in Generic Shooter XXIIV: Revelation: Reckoning. I also don't like playing coop/competitive with people not in the same room with me, just feels hollow otherwise. Games are a waste of time anyhow, I'd rather work on a hobby or a skill.
