Interesting, I imagine there's a bit of a learning curve to the technique but I may have to give it a try. Does it not leave little fibers in the eye?

No, not on the dole. I've just checked and Specsavers - a typical bong highstreet opticians chain, do eye tests for £20. And free for some medical conditions, a child or over 60. Combined with the fact they'll do you quite normal looking glasses starting at around £40+ I think my point stands. Who the Hell is paying $800 for this stuff?

Americlaps apparently. I payed ~£130 for my test and glasses, £60 frames £40ish in lens options and the test.
But if the opticians weren't being visited by a tonne of OAPs, dole bums and kids payed for by the NHS I can see the price going up drastically. if it was cash only their customer base would drop off drastically and they'd have to charge more, NHS customers kind of subsidise us paying customers.
