EU Germany tells Trump: Without us, space exploration ‘cannot be done’ - "Germany and Europe provide critical key technologies" for U.S. space missions, German Space Minister Dorothee Bär told POLITICO in an interview this week.

PARIS — Germany has a reminder for Washington: The United States needs Europe in order to get to outer space.

"Germany and Europe provide critical key technologies" for U.S. space missions, German Space Minister Dorothee Bär told POLITICO in an interview this week. "That is why we can confidently say: without us, it cannot be done."

“There are clear mutual dependencies,” she said, pointing to European-built technology used in NASA’s missions as proof that Europe still has leverage in the new space race.

Germany's message comes as Europe and the U.S. tussle over the control of key technologies like cloud, AI, microchips and more. Washington last week moved to restrict foreigners' access to Anthropic's latest AI models. The move galvanized European leaders' push to wean off U.S. tech and came just a week after the European Commission presented a tech sovereignty package to reduce the bloc's dependence on the U.S.

Bär said the dependence cuts both ways. “Without the European Service Module, the United States would not be able to fly to the moon,” the German minister said on the sidelines of the VivaTech trade show in Paris this week.

U.S. space agency NASA describes the European Service Module as the Orion spacecraft's “powerhouse," supplying it with electricity, propulsion, thermal control, air and water. The module is assembled in the northwestern German city of Bremen under a European Space Agency program.

German firm Jena-Optronik also makes star trackers to help the Orion spacecraft determine its orientation in space, Bär added.

World powers have revived the global space race in recent years, fighting for control over things like satellite communication, data and space resources. The U.S. is at the forefront of this race, driven in part by private-sector heavyweights such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX, with Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin also pursuing reusable rockets and lunar systems.

“We talk a great deal about the United States. At the same time, we must not overlook the fact that a strong alliance is forming on the other side, consisting of Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. I do not want these countries to win the race in space," Bär said.
Bezos visited Paris' VivaTech conference on Wednesday, telling attendees: "Demand for launch is insatiable. Right now, we have a tremendous backlog already."

German minister Bär warned that EU regulation is holding back European champions from competing. “I keep asking the same question: do we really need yet another Act?" she said, in reference to the EU's proposed Space Act presented in June last year.

Germany has been pushing back against the proposal, and the U.S. administration threatened retaliation against the rules if they were to unfairly target American firms.

“We want to reduce bureaucracy. Yet at the same time we continue creating new requirements," Bär said. The German government is working on a new national space law aimed at helping companies roll out technologies quicker, Bär said.

Did Germany help us get to the Moon? Yeah, indirectly. Do we need Germany's help now? No, fuck off. Could Germany have gotten to the Moon if things gone a bit more right for the Führer? Probably, but modern Germany has a massive inferiority complex and would rather set themselves on fire than to imagine a Nazi flag on the Moon.

Thing is, we don't need German collaboration on this. America is attractive to talent just because you can move here and legally become a batshit bond villain and it's totally OK.

Bond villains make a lot of money and economically benefit a lot of henchmen.

If your country is too uptight to tolerate bond villains they'll go to America or Russia. And in America you don't actually need to suck off the president like they do in Russia.

Sorry Germany, I guess it sucks to suck.

And Russia's bond villains don't do cool shit, they just buy yachts and dachas. The Oceangate guy was completely retarded and took innocent people with him but at least he had a retarded dream.

What will likely happen with any reshoring attempt is that whatever new companies pop up will not last when they realize that the Mittelstand companies are designed to corner their extremely niche market and then dominate it by understanding that they are there for constant stability, not constant growth. Lots of American companies are run with the idea that they must grow or die, which they do when they realize that the market for extremely specific optronics for space use is entirely reliant on US.gov contracts, especially when the very specific thing becomes export-restricted. German Mittelstand company can sell it globally, already have the extremely complex production process perfected, and are likely the top brand anyways so everyone will go for them over some unknown who hasn't been proven.

Well yeah and this will never change till the US embraces autism.

Then why isn't there a German flag on the moon, frau?

I'm not trying to be rude, but how much industry does Germany have left? I know they have basically kneecapped themselves as far as energy is concerned, so could they guarantee that any components could be manufactured on time and on budget?
The G-11 and Leopard 2 say "Hi" when it comes to Germany being unable to deliver on time, on budget, and on spec.

we could replace the krauts with eastern europe lol

hitler would roll in his grave even more than he currently is

The article is just a Kraut saying 'look at how useful it is to let business work and innovate without gay restrictions'
Yes we amerimutts also support the idea that the space race belongs to countries with real industry unburdened by gay restrictions. So Germany is out by definition. France is halfway to that mark because any gay restrictions they impose on the rest of the EU are designed to benefit France's uncompetitive economy.
