Feels like forever since I've seen a wrestler dress like an actual friggen wrestler. Love that cartoonishly colourful outfit. And pink + blue + black/white are a great colour combo, troons be damned.

He was a self made wrestler (he never went to a school), promoter (rode on effy's coat tails) and could do decent promos (by indy standards). Indy marks loved him.

That's only a recent thing, riding on the coat tails of matt cardona. Him leaving GCW for the WWE really opened things up for Joey, he's even banging Megan Bayne which is a upgrade from Allie Katch

WWE hired him?
He's a deathmatch guy who doesn't seem to care about getting hurt so he kind of has the same appeal as Darby.
He's not the best in ring but he's fairly charismatic and can actually talk which gives him a leg up over 99% of indie guys.

Credit where its due first. Janela books himself like a 90s/2000s wrestling fan would. He wrestles guys like Marty Jannety (one of Janetty's best matches) and Virgil and will shift to guys like Zandig and Jeff Hart from 5 Dollar Wrestling. He loves the game and that's respectable.
He books his 'Mania weekend shows the same. Nostalgia acts but done well. Because of Janela, we got to see La Parka (OG) wrestle Masato Tanaka in a hardcore match. He booked PCO against Walter (Gunther) and gave PCO's career a second wind.
Positives out of the way, Joey is a dick. He spent a year picking a fight with Enzo Amore on twitter, tried to fight him in person and Enzo exposed him so hard, he was begging Enzo for a truce on twitter over drinks. It got worse when Joey and Big Cass were booked on an indy show together and Cass threatened to beat the piss out of him over the whole ordeal.
Joey goes after IWC "thoughtcrime" guys like Drake Younger and Hulk Hogan for clout, but defends guys like Effy. He also got beat up by a fan a few months ago and if not for the GCW locker room emptying out to help Joey, he'd probably got worse than what he did.
tl;dr. 2008 420chan mark memed his way into pro wrestling and talks trash they can't back up.

I knew he was a colossal asshole when he tried to talk shit about Brutus Beefcake and somehow came out looking like a tool while Brutus sounded like a reasonable professional.
"Most of the guys I’ve worked with are pretty cool. But we brought Brutus ‘the Barber’ Beefcake to England to do one spot. I was wrestling the Invisible Man in Blackpool, England. I said to Brutus, ‘After I beat the Invisible Man, you just come in and cut his hair.’ He was sitting there drinking his Bud Light, he goes, ‘What do you think I am, a fucking asshole? I just flew all the way here, fucking fourteen hours, flight delays, all this and you’re gonna make me fucking cut an Invisible Man’s hair? Make me look like shit? Fuck you.’ Then he sipped his Bud Light. ‘I’m sorry, man.’ Brutus ‘the Barber’ Beefcake kinda fucking sucks."
