The finish to Cena/Gunther reminded me of when you're a kid and an older brother/cousin/whoever put you in a wrestling hold. You'd struggle to get out, but every time you think you make progress, they'd just get you right back in the same position because they were stronger than you. Eventually you just resign to the fact that you can't escape and say uncle or call out to your mom or whoever to break it up. Cena has a bunch of older brothers, no doubt he went through that as a kid. It was a nice little touch that I think was Cena thing, not a thing Triple H booked or anything.

That was my interpretation. It wasn't that he was going to pass out or couldn't take it. More like a "man, I just can't get out of this, can I? Alright, this is enough."
 
In the moment, I didn't like the finish of Cena's last match. But, almost 48 hours removed, I think it was poetic to a degree. I don't think anyone wanted a finish where Cena just tapped out, but the smile on his face just before he did it....man that was some great shit. After fighting a great match, John realized that he finally lost a step. He even said it himself that if he ever lost a step, he was done performing. Gunther made him lose that step. Cena realized it, smiled at being bested, and tapped out as a show of grace. Even Icarus laughed as he plummeted to the ocean after flying too close to the sun. Not because he had fallen, but because he knew he had soared.


The IWC is a fucking gold mine right now though. Seeing everyone getting worked so hard at this is very satisfying. However, I do feel that this entire retirement year was mishandled. I blame it on that messy angle of Rock/Travis Scott being involved between Cena and Cody. All because Travis Scott didn't want to play anymore, they just drop it? Rock knows better from a business standpoint. The heel turn would have meant more if Rock was involved more, but I think you needed more than a few months to do a successful heel run for John. What John did in 6-ish months as a heel should have realistically been a 2 year program of revolving characters. Regardless, Cena had some great matches from SummerSlam onward and has successfully put nuclear heat on Gunther, who is now in line to be established as a career ender, much like young Randy Orton.
 
I was going through old WWE shows. What a coincidence considering the recent news. During the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression era, it seemed like everyone was a wrestling fan. RIP Rob Reiner.

I had my brother put me in the sharpshooter to see what it's like. It absolutely hurts like hell.
