Science Gene-editing experiment turns fluffy hamsters into ‘aggressive’ mutant rage monsters

A team of scientists in the US have accidentally created overly-aggressive mutant hamsters following a gene-editing experiment.

Using the controversial CRISPR technology, researchers at Northwestern University were examining a hormone called vasopressin and its receptor, Avpr1a.

They opted to try and remove the latter from a group of Syrian hamsters, with the expectation it would increase bonding and co-operation between the lovable little critters.

That’s because Avpr1a is understood to regulate things like teamwork and friendship as well as dominance and bonding.

Their expectation proved to be wrong. Very wrong.

‘We were really surprised at the results,’ said Professor H Elliot Albers, the lead researcher on the study.

‘We anticipated that if we eliminated vasopressin activity, we would reduce both aggression and social communication.

‘But the opposite happened.’

The academics found the adorable bundles of fluff turned into mutant rage monsters exhibiting ‘high levels of aggression towards other same-sex individuals’.

All hamsters, regardless of genotype or sex, exhibited aggression (including chasing, biting, and pinning) when exposed to a nonaggressive, same-sex conspecific in a neutral arena.

Professor Albert admitted the results of the experiment were a ‘startling conclusion’.

The scientists chose to experiment with Syrian hamsters because, unlike mice, they have a social organisation that’s similar to humans.

Professor Albert explained: ‘Even though we know that vasopressin increases social behaviours by acting within a number of brain regions, it is possible that the more global effects of the Avpr1a receptor are inhibitory.

‘We don’t understand this system as well as we thought we did.’

Certain snakes still have the gene needed to code for limbs - just silenced - so the plan is to reactivate it in embryonic snakes and see if the babies get born with legs. Literally spitting in gods eye at that point.

Oh I can imagine, this begs me to question what China is working on because I'm sure the stuff they're into is more devious and overall insane, aside from what's been uncovered such as bio weapons meant to target people by race, super soldier stuff which may or may not be effective yet.

Hamsters are little assholes to begin with, I can’t imagine them worse.

I've had the Syrians and the dwarfs. Syrians kinda suck. Dwarfs are cool but so tiny and squirmy that they are even more unsuited for children than Syrians. Overall I'd recommend rats more than hamsters. Even mice are more fun. Hamsters are cute. But they are little autists constantly hoarding food and working on their nest.

I had a mother and a daughter dwarf hamster that lived on opposite ends of a big tank (stupid sister thought siblings didn't breed. so babies) . They mostly respected each other's territory. But housing them together is a risk and you have to keep an eye out for aggression. I didn't think the daughter was going to make it so as soon as she was weaned I hand fed her until she could feed herself. She had almost no hair for a couple of months and was so tiny. She was cool and I got attached. In a year and a half she died. I never want small animals again because of this. :(

So super aggressive super soldiers? My guess is they'd rather reverse the results and create compliant pod dwellers who happily eat their roach blocks as they CONSOOM product with their paltry earnings from THE COMPANY.

And of course they used Syrians because they tend to be little jerks anyway.

Hamsters have always been aggressive mutant rage monsters. Fuck every last one of them.
I was gonna say, I never met a hamster that wasn't 100% willing to go full genocidal maniac at the drop of a hat regardless of the opponent.

Get rats instead. You can reason with rats and they don't hate humans quite as much.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS? everybody in science should write an Essay on "der Zauberlehrling" or we will never survive as a species...

I understand science needs to document shit for it to be science and not fucking around; but I would've told them what would happen. Because I'd reason that if you were to try the same to humans, you'd create a bunch of Norman Bates and not a bunch of over-protective moms. Sure humans and hamsters are plenty different; but we have case studies of sociopathic behavior and people who can't or are unable to bond with others and what kind of behavior we get out of it. Hamsters don't have the social/cultural stigma or laws saying "No attacking, biting, killing, etc." So if you were to remove the thing that regulates that part of behavior, I'd wager nature would default to unregulated competition before unregulated cooperation.

But now that we've proven it and written it down... can we fucking stop for a moment...
