Depends what you mean by "denial." They probably have some kind of psychological fuckery preventing them from being attracted to the opposite sex, like PTSD from getting molested or some shit. Sexual abuse is known to cause gay. So, in theory they could have been straight if not for the diddling.

I think a good chunk of Gay people are just straight people who got mindbroken during the 2000's - early 2010's who failed one of those shit tests in middle school to prove if you're gay or not, there was a huge obsession back then with proving you weren't a DANG DIRTY HOMO, so maybe some kids never got over it.
Another reason could be that because it's trendy and they think a gay relationship an work thanks the media fetishizing it but never sat down to think "wait, putting your dick in a butt is fucking gay and gross"; This applies to social recluses who never scored in the 2010's.
