Anyone have land planarians aka hammerhead worms in their gardens? They look like alien slugs and eat worms.

This year I didn't get to harvest any veggies as after I planted them a family member got sick and I went to take care of them for several weeks. Actually I lied I did get to harvest me potatoes

ALSO I HAVE CRACKED THE CODE: the orchid growing code. I've been keeping a phalaenopsis orchid alive successfully for about 2-3 months. Turns out they enjoy an environment similar to what African Violets like. I water it once every 1.5 weeks or so, I run it under slightly warm tap water for about 1-2 minites and then put it on a wire rack so it can drain completely. I have yet to feed it as I don't think it's good to feed em in winter but I'm not sure and I have to look into it. I got it repotted as well so it's in a nice mixture of bark, charcoal, moss and some white shit that may be vermiculite but I'm not sure.
Anyway, tis cool, I'm quite happy I was able to figure out what's best for it
 
Feel free to shoot me in the face for double posting but here is my orchid. It's done blooming for now and I just watered it on Wednesday, I also dusted it today with compressed air in a can (because if I were to wipe the leaves with a damp cloth it may cause fungal growth) and yes you do need to dust most houseplants unless you're regularly spraying the entire plant down in the shower. Dust buildup impedes photosynthesis+it's ugly and bad for the air in your home.
I've been reading up on feeding it, seems it can take 20-20-20 fertilizer (which I have) but around half strength and you must feed it after a watering as dry roots can be burned by the fertilizer. I'm going to try feeding it after the next watering next week.

I'll let you know if it gets fucking burned like when I sprayed my moonflower vine with Neem Oil and scarred it for several weeks
 
Hyped as fuck for this year's growing season. I'm going to rent a bed at the local community garden so I don't have to buy/make my own and try out the square foot garden method.
Still figuring out what I will put in each square foot of garden, carrots and onions are a must. I think my issue is I'm too used to growing weird shit so normal things like peas and squash don't excite me as much as they should.
I have 5 roma tomato seedlings I'm planting in containers at my home, I baby my tomatoes too much to leave them unattended at a community garden

The grant money came through a couple weeks ago to continue into summer my research project on growth regulators and containerized edibles, so that's good news I guess.

Because I made a dried flower jar using plants that are growing in my yard/home this growing season. The reindeer moss is the only thing I didn't grow tho.

Glad you necroed this; it's a good thread. Your dried flower jar is also good. Is that where you usually display it? The colors are perfect there.

I'll admit to a hoarder impulse when it comes to discarded plants - "How could someone just throw that out?! Don't they know it's worth money??" Over here, I just scavenged a small fortune in Clivia from someone's compost heap. There is literally nothing wrong with these plants other than a rich person grew bored with them. Now I'm splitting and potting them; the plan is to live in a Clivia jungle all winter, and sell them when I need the space in the back room.

The edited-out thing is my feet because Jeepers Christmas have I been on the internet long enough to know better.
 
Since I still don't have a yard ( :'( ) I've been thinking about trying one of those windowsill kits again for tomatoes or something like that. The last time I did, though, it didn't go very well. They aren't expensive at all, so I may just go for it.

So glad I found this thread!!

Covid has me living in a place I can legit grow some things beyond my usual shitty LA balcony herb planters this season (we're just coming out of winter, so summer plantings are a go in the next few weeks). Will do the usual toms, peas, cukes, chard, kale, radish, arugula. Herbs are always popping here so I'm set in that regard - the curry leaf tree is so fucking big I can't give it away fast enough.

But I think I'm gonna be a flower fag for a minute and give some Dahlias a go. This is the real experiment shit for me, I've never really done any proper flowers before beyond some pansies, borage and other edibles. Wish I had the climate for peonies, alas no.
 
Is it better to have chicken wire over the top of a large planter (150x90x30cm) or directly on the soil? I need to keep a large cat from absolutely crushing my snow peas by shitting in the box.
 
Going to try to keep some coleus, a spider bush, and an ivy plant alive over the winter. Got one of those shitty upright greenhouse things and a grow light. Going to attempt to grow some tomatoes, bell peppers, green onions, and some kind of freakishly hot pepper (I'm looking at you, bhut jolokia (any other suggestions welcome)) as well.

Fuckers better be yuge by next year.

Anybody else have bonsai trees? Got a ~2 year old juniper myself.

Flowers are great! Helping out the bee population, they smell nice, and add some good colors to the surroundings. I could only grow flowers that like the shade (apt on the north side of the building) but they still took off.

I'm excited!! My tubers arrived the other day, but I'm still a few weeks out from getting them in the ground. A bit too cold still. We have spider plants all through our yard, they grow like no one's business.

I'm really interested to see how you go with the grow light set up - winter tomatoes? Imagine! I had this incredible Thai bird's eye chilli bush just on my apartment balcony. Now my fucking ex has it. And it's probably dead. Like his heart :drink:

The rest of my beds are ready. Our compost is sooooo rich at the moment, so I'm optimistic for the veggies going in. Their soil is composted, manured and watered in. Next weekend we get planting!
 
I was pretty much a farmer all summer. I got about a month to go before I wrap it up. My last round of carrots will probably be this week or so, and my chili’s and tomatoes are coming out to Oct. I didn’t grow all that much though. My boyfriend grows way more stuff than me and I don’t know how he does it.
 
Prepping my last bed today for some more herbs and come to find fucking white grubs just living rent-free. FML.

We're about to enter 'june bug' season (we call them Christmas Beetles) so I've no doubt that's what they are... but I'm not sure if they warrant some sort of chemical (ideally natural) intervention, or wether I can just manually pick them out as I take care of the bed? There wasn't like a total infestation, maybe 5 in a 5ft by 3ft patch. Gah. Gross little fuckers.
