Since most modern "gaming" hardware is a loaded subject with shills and ripoff merchants on all sides I was wondering if any kiwis had experiences in buying "ergonomic" chairs.
Consider this a general thread on the subject.

Personally I've got a cheap uncomfortable POS from IKEA that's shed it's fake leather everywhere and want something better.
Obviously a standing desk would be superior but
A: Saving that till I move apartment and
B: an ergonomic chair is always a useful piece of furniture. Gotta read somewhere! (Not the bed, the cat sleeps there)

Bonus points for reclining and or other cool features. That shit is good for watching movies.

Personally I'm looking for mid range to low hi-end prices. Unlike the current piece of junk I have I definitely intend on keeping this one when I move.

Considered putting this in hulkamania since this technically has to do with "physical wellness" but it's definately the opposite of moving around

A gaming chair is defined by its use, not its design. Any rifle becomes a sniper rifle in the hands of a trained marksman, and any chair becomes a gamer's chair when it is stained by Cheeto remnants and body odor.

I don't like office/ergonomic chairs. They cost too much and are not as comfortable as they should be bang for buck.

Your best bet is to find someone wrecking a car with nice, big, cushioned, comfortable, manually adjusted* seats. Working with a private seller rather than a pick a part junkyard is going to be less stressful. Something like an 80s Caprice is perfect. Git yourself a seat with the tracks still on it, git yourself some plywood and build yourself a box to sit the seat on at an ergonomically optimal height. Bolt the tracks onto the box. You now have a perfect ergonomic chair for all your gaming/masturbation requirements.

If you're worried about the box damaging flooring, or being hard to move, it's usually hard to sell a full set of auto carpets unless they're 100% perfect, so just ask for some to pad the underside.

* unless you are a dork who understands the electrics

Over at work they got a mess of Gaming Chairs because it was a cheap lot and they needed to replace some office chairs.
I'm a standing desk sorta guy so I don't really mess with chairs one way or another.

Just fill up a box with neet shit, tape it and voila your new chair

I like this idea, car seats are usually very comfortable. I've been wondering what exactly I'd have to do to just take a car seat (from like the scrapyard I guess) and mount it to something so I could use it as a proper computer chair

Your main practical consideration no matter how you do it is to get it with the rails that the seat slides on- otherwise it'll be a huge pain to mount. Ideally, you want one with the seat rails at exactly the same vertical level, or you'll have to fuck around with spacers to mount it right (or deal with it being constantly on an angle).

There are a couple of 'Instructable' type guides around that show how to do this in the nicest possible way step by step- taking an old office chair base, then mounting a car seat attached to a piece of plywood onto the chair.
https://www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-Car-Seat-Office-Chair/

If you go that way then you'd a) want to make absolutely sure the old chair base still holds good hydraulic pressure (jump up and down on top of it a couple times) b) make 100% sure it's balanced right so it doesn't apply irregular pressure on the base and fuck out early.

I've always just attached the chair/rails onto a bit of ply and stacked it on top of a large crate or made a box the right height. If I had still had access to a welder I think the ideal would be to just build up a real simple frame with angle iron under the rails and then tying them together at right angles, with four simple legs.
