Gamergate in a nutshell.

shit's dumb. i don't have the full story, but from what i do know, i don't see what's so unique about this situation. reporters sleep around and have favors. sjws are internet mosquitos. what's so special about this.

done being a buzzkill.

A good swath of the world is embroiled in bloody civil wars, revolutions, and insurrection after insurrection and all we have is a bitchy faux feminist and her gaggle of equally ugly gal pals.

We live in crazy times

That being said notice how most of her projects have her in a "design", "tester", "writer", "mentor" or "art" position. With this yes, she could get hired. Could she pull an Anita (who's hired by a big triple A company, EA, as a consultant on Mirror's Edge 2)? I'd say no but she could find her way to a smaller company who does smaller games.

I have no love for Anita, but she did a file a complaint with the FBI regarding harrasement: https://twitter.com/Nero/status/510485248992608256

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not sure that the FBI gives a shit about bad words on the internet. Anonymous threats to random idiots don't really constitute a crime. I don't know what evidence there is that shows her having contacted them, but it better be more than her recording her own phone calls. Remember that drama fags on the internet never make frivolous calls to the FBI.

I had to do this some years ago. It's really not a big deal and may even be automated now. Filing a report took about 10 minutes out of my life and represented nothing like any great commitment of time or resources (an agent showed up at my door like two weeks later, told me the threat was overseas and probably nothing to worry about and handed me a pamphlet. I actually still have it if you want me to scan it.)

i'd argue that it's pretty hard not to be "superior" when the people involved in a shitstorm are person who doesn't even try to make herself appear likable, 4chan and a lot of angry gamers especially when all of those people have seemingly attempted nothing resembling any sort of decency but i digress

you seem to be a little misinformed and that's more than understandable in this situation because that's what Zoe's side wants to happen in this.

there are disgruntled people who have a homicidal hatred for SJW's and feminists, that's true. but they are not anywhere close to a majority.
there is a large amount of white, cis male gamers, that's true. and they are the majority.

however they are not the demographic that this involves. the people of gamergate want one thing and that's the public admittance of various news sources, especially Kotaku, to admit their lack of being recuse. in spite of whatever flame war or trolls or a-loggers on zoe, that is what this is about. journalistic integrity. it's about people who are in a multi-million dollar industry trying to hide away their child-like clique status' with one another and their fans being completely blind to it and even defending them because of emotional appeal or strawman arguments.

i find any harassment done against Zoe uncalled for and shameful, but nobody leaked her nudes, they were literally online available for public viewing because she wanted to be a pornstar earlier in her life.

when she was "doxxed", all of the phone numbers and addresses lead to places completely irrelevant to her. even a motorcycle repairshop in Hawaii.

i don't care that Zoe fucked a lot of people, including people that have covered her DQ as well as GAME_JAM putting her in an extremely positive light as well as her PR agent in order to win an award she didn't deserve. i think it's not right, but that doesn't piss me off.

what pisses me off is how there has been censorship abroad by Zoe and people around her to keep this quiet. the fact that people go out of their way to try to shut this up, let alone not publicly apologizing for it because they don't think they have too. it's a principle thing for me, really.

if you want actual information though, start here and here and here.

okay hold up a moment here are you implying that kotaku and friends had journalistic integrity to begin with because i'm just going to be real with you gaming journalism has been about the money and not integrity for a loooong time in the circles of the major reviewers

if most of this is all about how kotaku and the gang of major reviewers suck dick at being a good gaming journalism sites then what exactly was everyone expecting here? if you give a big reviewer a fuckton of money they'll favorably review because that's how gaming journalism often works now. all major places and a lot of the medium sized ones are biased and mostly in it for the money and not the integrity. and i mean it's not like flagrant bribes and biases for games is anything new, it's just this is the most flagrant of them all. i guess you could argue that gamergate is a sort of screed against that sort of thing, but it's not like reviewers are going to stop being biased for things or taking those big bucks from companies when they're offered if they review a game favorably (especially since most of it's probably behind closed doors)

in any case kotaku has never been a good news source for really anything and i'm honestly not sure why people haven't caught on to that until this happened because they're basically everything wrong with news sources in general

also yeah of course people are gonna want to keep quiet about a bribe that's kind of something you don't want to put out in to the public air because that's a reputation sinker for sure

Yeah, at around $60 a pop it took loosing a couple of hundred in bad AAA games to make me stop trusting these sites when it came to reviews. 9/10 games that were just mediocre and not woth buying at full price.

Howeve I can say that I had been using then again when it came to indie games that had a more niche following. I bought Papers Please due to the great reviews it recieved in some of these sites.... So it's a shame that indie games have now fallen into this kind of scandal.

I feel like the FBI thing is probably about the CP she got spammed with later by some crazy over twitter. Even people who vocally hate Anita thought that was fucked up. We'll just have to wait and see what Milo comes up with.

Someone has hacked #GamerGate Harrassment.

For the record: currently it's a thing about Testosterone Boosters.

All this Anita talk makes me wish that Kitetales did Tropes vs. Women instead. Her voice is nice and she's informative. I like Anita, but sometimes she overreacts. :)

Apparently Sarkeesian was sent child porn.

The Feds are likely investigating that rather than the shrieks of a terminal victim.

I feel like I'm watching The Big Lebowski here. Anyone can complain to the FBI and the FBI is obligated to, uh, shit itself and do nothing. They're not running around following "leads" or anything but if you got a mean email, you can go ahead and call them and file a report. There's no barrier to entry.

This is one of the reasons #gamergate is hilarious, people are spinning in circles chasing their tails. Filing a report with the FBI required zero effort on Anita Sarkeesian's part and zero commitment on the FBI's part. Why are people so adamant to believe this? The benefit of the doubt costs nothing while people investigate, and will save people from looking like they're just bullshitting.

Milo is another. The guy is a cut-rate lolcow on his own -- a gay, god-fearing right-wing Roman Catholic whose primary accomplishment to date was being despised on a multi-continental scale. He ran his last company into the ground, and maintained a bizarre and totally one-sided feud with the author of the articles at the Guardian about what a shitty company he had, complete with tweets like these.

I'm glad I don't buy games based on reviews anymore. I mostly go by what my friends recommend or whatever is popular on the internet. Actually, most of the games I've bought recently I got because someone I follow on YouTube did a one-off playing it and I liked what I saw. Still, I know there are a lot of people who put faith in gaming journalism, and it really does cost people time and money. It also promotes mediocre games at the expense of fantastic ones.

Well, the people of #gamergate aren't really too connected. It's singular people that get the information and spread it, then you have everyone else using that information to find something else which means you can end up with so many theories that lead to nothing and just distract everyone. In the beginning so much info was laying out that you really could just spend one night looking and find something. Now people close to the Zoe's clique have started to shut up a bit, made Facebook and twitter profiles private, deleted things, and are starting to cover their asses a bit. There's not as much low hanging fruit. The average supporter of #gamergate wouldn't know where to look for information at this point.

This is where people like Milo tend to come into play.

Milo doesn't have the most integrity in the world and many people brought it up when he picked up the story. Same with Adam Baldwin when he started tweeting about it. Some people said any exposure was good, others said it'd backfire being associated with them. He's getting too close to the people of #gamergate. He's pandering to them. The guy just recently started streaming on Twitch when he used to make fun of gamers himself. He's loving the attention. What can you do though? If he now feels he has an audience then he has incentive to dig a bit to find more information. Of course if he gets his info wrong or falsifies information then #gamergate would have taken a bigger loss than if Milo had never picked up the story. Again, what can you do? People on /v/ are already calling him "based", offering to be his husbando. So while I do question him I'm interested to see what he does because it's not as if many other outlets are covering this. Hell, the other guy who called the SFPD and got the same info as Milo was dubious as hell with his redpiller blog.

I think people are starting to realize that no amount of information is going to end this. Zoe has already done a ton of bad shit but is often viewed as the victim because the information that proves otherwise only circulates by word of mouth or image files. It's been proven multiple times that Kotaku writers were only looking out for their friends and offering nothing resembling a disclosure (except they went back and added them recently once all this shit happened) but nothing really happened. I think that's making many people frustrated and confused so when some journalist shows up and pretty much says "I'll take it from here" he's met with open arms.

The funny thing is that anything associated with 4chan had a shit reputation before going into this. Even if things blow up against /v/ it won't change things that much so in a way they're one of the few groups that will come out of this pretty much how they went in.
