My taste is so weird and different from most people that I usually find most games people find a 10/10 to be a 6-7/10, and games that people find to be a 6-7/10 I find to be a 10/10. For example, The Wonderful 101 was my favorite game of 2013 when something like Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us were just meh, with me being the latter at least 5 times and still finding it meh.

I prefer shit like Rhythm games that take fucking skill to master and all that, and most don't come to the west anymore unless it's an import or Round1 location

Sounds to me that your tastes aren't weird, it's that you expect a game out of your game. Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us focus less on gameplay and more on their story

Also Gggmanlives. Found out about him recently from Mr. O' Shaughnessy, he does alot of FPS and retro-FPS games.

I'll generally watch some footage first. If that looks promising I'll check reviews for negative things and determine if they matter to me. If everything feels right I take the plunge. Rarely fails.

That said I usually check LGR, GameSack, or Classic Game Room (/Undertow) for footage and potential problem warnings.

I simply read through Steam and GoG reviews along with watching any gameplay footage. As for any reviewers that do their stuff through video, can't name any aside from maybe Dunkey.

If I'm interested in a game I'll go looking for several video reviews. Small time youtubers are better since they actually demonstrate in-game what mechanics and problems there are, but it takes a few videos to find someone who knows what they are talking about and aren't simply a mindless fanboy. Big sites are virtually a trailer for the game with a voice over. Big Youtubers are usually sponsored by the same people paying the advertising for the gaming websites so you simply ignore them.

So I just pretty much have to do the legwork to find out how the game is before I buy it.

Roger Ebert. He was consistent when it came to his opinion of video games. I may not have agreed with him, but he never sold out to any studio.

Not really a review channel, but MetalJesusRocks is one of the few gaming channels I am still subscribed to. 'Course his gaming stuff 99% retro and 1% PS 4, so I mostly watch him for nothing other than entertainment. His music videos I can take or leave.

As an added bonus, I can honestly state that despite watching quite a few of his videos I have no clue what his politics are. He's all about the topic at hand.
