You get cited by other furries as a shining example of "look, not all of us are homestuck retards!!!!". People listen to you. Anything you tweet gets that sweet, sweet engagement. You're basically a low-level celebrity. People get drunk on the hype of seeing their own name mentioned by thousands, it's just as addictive as any drug.

It's a good "step up" in the fandom given there's so many people, and without artistic talent, or some other hook, said person can easily disappear. They try to bootlick all these "exceptional individuals" to make them look good without actually putting in the effort themselves and forget that anyone with internet access who's had enough exposure to these freaks, or browsed a furry feed for five seconds, knows by pattern recognition that an enthusiastic member of the "fandom" is either a potent autist or some kind of disgusting fetishist (often both) by default.

From what I've seen, most people either try to turn the other cheek (a friend of mine went to a local convention after it was found the person running it was actively sheltering a zoo/pedo who was caught, less than a week prior, luring a 12 year old girl. Friends argument: "i won't let a bad egg ruin my good time") or they step away from the fandom and get attacked online for doing so.
A lot of it is that furries just can't handle the normal world, so they retreat into gatekept little friend groups. I know a some older furs do that because it's easier to pick and choose who your friends are, who your "family" is, verses having to deal with normal, real family members or friends that might not share your viewpoints. Once someone develops beliefs that go against their own, then that person is shunned and the next friend pops up.
This almost sounded so absurd it didn't sink in for me.
