Watched it whenever it came up when I was a child. A fantastic show that you can connect to even with the cultural divide. Wonder if we'll ever get such a show again.

On a related note, I heard that Alfonso Ribiero, Carlton Banks, couldn't find work for years after the show because he was just known as "the guy that dances on the fresh prince". Well, he finally had a break and got to host AFV, which is pretty darn lucky for him I gotta say. But before that, he literally just paid for his guest appearance at parties, and had to do "the Carlton Dance" to pay bills. That must have been a humbling decade and a half.

Dude that sucks! He was great in Fresh Prince. Uncle Phil is still my favorite but Carlton is a close second.

It was good because they had their very special episodes and you can't take them away now because if they tried some of that shit today they'd be labeled white supremacists. Talking episodes like Will and Carlton trying out for a fraternity, Viv and Philips Angela Davis-lite friend coming to visit or even the first episdode with Phils clap back about Will's generation being fairweathers.

While the later season episodes did suck, one that always stood out in my mind is the one where Will finds out that Ashley secretly dropped out of prep school to enroll in public school and Ashley (arguably the nicest of the entire cast of characters) suddenly goes full viscious bitch mode to basically force Will to pose as her father for a mandatory parent/teacher conference that the public school was requiring all parents attend.

Ashley going "it's your fault I forged papers to exit an ultra expensive prep school that costs more than your mother makes in a year to go hang out with hood rats and skanks in a public school, by introducing me to the street life!" on Will and bullying him to go along with the scheme and the reveal she had been pulling it for a couple of years, was a scene that made me realize that while the show largely downplayed the impact/influence Will had on his cousins, while Will was an all together good influence on Carlton and Hillary and the baby Banks, Will really brought out the worst in Ashley in terms of unwittingly corrupting her and never realizing it.

Also, add that I always hated the episode where we meet Will's dad not because of how he abandons Will a second time at the end of the episode, but because it shattered my childhood head canon that Will's dad was dead and why no one talked about him.

Will is black and therefore I knew wouldn't have a father. The black kids I knew growing up never had fathers so I just thought that was a thing with them.

Alfonso Ribeiro's four year old daughter recently had a pretty bad accident after falling off her scooter leaving her to have skin removed by a scalpel so can't really say his family has had any breaks.

This was one of these shows where despite being family friendly is still pretty funny. How they did it was something you can't get away with in modern shows anymore.

Fun fact: Fresh Prince only existed because Will Smith (who started out life as a one hit wonder with the novelty hit "Parents Just Don't Understand") didn't pay his taxes on the money that he made off that novelty hit and was kind of F.U.C.K.E.D.

Quincy Jones knew about this and arranged for Smith to get an acting gig to earn him a steady paycheck so he could stave off the IRS via making payments on his tax deb via his TV earningst. He basically gathered a bunch of TV folk to create a vehicle for Smith, which ultimately became Fresh Prince.
