It's no more a fetish than Happy Tree Friends is a fetish. Some people get off to it, but for others it's about being edgy or drawing gore.

I'm not really into Happy Tree Friends, but I think there's a difference between cutesy animals behaving violently with each other and cutesy animals being abused by a human. The latter is a lot closer to IRL animal abuse than the former.

Also, @Tayjelir, I have a cat, and while this may sound dumb, she's the closest thing to a child I have right now. And guess what? She's not really any smarter than one of those fluffies. Sure, the fluffies' stupidity is massively overexaggerated, but real animals are pretty dumb, too. My cat likes to play with her shit and drink out of the toilet. She can't even talk to me and sometimes she even scratches or bites at me. There's this undercurrent in the fluffy stuff that it's okay to hurt them because they're so stupid, but they're probably smarter than a lot of real pets. So if it's okay to hurt fluffies for that, what stops them from thinking it would be okay to hurt a real animal for that? Sure, they're imaginary, but the kind of justifications those stories use could be applied in real life as well, and it's the potential of those real life events happening that bothers people.

It's just like the argument that drawn CP is okay because no real children are hurt. While that's true, the work still promotes the idea that raping kids is acceptable on some level, and a lot of people are going to be upset by that. If someone's threatening to kill you over it, it's stupid, but you have to understand that you're on some level suggesting something horrible to them, and people have a tendency to overreact about that kind of stuff.

According to Know Your Meme, there's quite a community around it. Most of it seems quite harmless. The videos they have listed seemed to be of the Youtube Poop variety, where a bunch of random crap happens, usually to music or sound effects, and most of the images are silly, and occasionally mildly amusing.
